Chapter 17: The Life We Choose

Spring came slowly to the harbor.
The kind of season that didn’t arrive all at once, but in small, stubborn ways—warmer mornings, longer evenings, the smell of salt and something new in the air.
Emma insisted on opening every window in the house.
“It smells like outside,” she announced, as if that alone justified everything.
Daniel laughed. “That’s… generally the goal.”
She ignored him and ran off, the blue rabbit tucked under her arm like it still held secrets.
Grace was on the floor nearby, propped up on a blanket, watching everything with wide, curious eyes. Antonio sat cross-legged across from her, completely absorbed in the way she kept trying—and failing—to grab her own foot.
“Careful,” he murmured. “That’s advanced-level coordination.”
“She’s six months old,” I said.
“And already ambitious.”
I smiled.
There was something surreal about moments like this.
Not because they were perfect.
But because they weren’t.
There were no headlines.
No threats.
No whispered deals happening in other rooms.
Just a family that didn’t make sense on paper—but somehow worked anyway.
Alessandro stepped in from the porch, phone in hand.
“Board approved the final restructuring,” he said. “It’s done.”
The last of the Moretti empire—at least the version that thrived in shadows—was officially gone.
“And?” I asked.
“And nothing,” he said. “That’s the point.”
No drama.
No resistance.
Just… an ending.
Emma reappeared, breathless.
“Mom! Dad said I can plant something!”
Daniel walked in behind her. “I said we could try planting something.”
“She heard what she wanted,” Alessandro said.
“That tracks,” I replied.
Emma grabbed my hand. “Come on!”
I let her pull me outside, the others following more slowly.
The backyard wasn’t impressive.
No manicured gardens.
No imported stone.
Just uneven grass, a small patch of soil, and space.
Emma dropped to her knees and started digging with far too much enthusiasm.
“What are we planting?” I asked.
She paused.
“…I don’t know.”
Daniel crouched beside her. “That’s usually step one.”
She looked up at him, serious.
“Something that grows.”
I felt that settle somewhere deeper than it should have.
Antonio stepped out with a small box of seeds—something simple, store-bought, unremarkable.
“Here,” he said. “These don’t require perfection.”
“Good,” I said. “We’re not exactly qualified.”
Emma took the seeds like they were something sacred.
We planted them together.
Messy.
Uneven.
Not particularly efficient.
But real.
When we were done, Emma sat back on her heels, dirt on her hands, face, and somehow in her hair.
“Now what?” she asked.
“Now we wait,” Daniel said.
She frowned. “That’s boring.”
“That’s life,” Alessandro added.
Emma considered that, then nodded like she had decided to accept it—for now.
I looked around at all of them.
Daniel, still learning.
Antonio, still healing.
Grace, just beginning.
Alessandro, standing steady in a life he had chosen instead of inherited.
And Emma—
The reason any of us were here at all.
The truth hadn’t just destroyed something.
It had built something else in its place.
Something quieter.
Something harder to see.
But something that didn’t require lies to survive.
Emma slipped her hand into mine.
“Will it grow?” she asked.
I looked at the patch of soil, at the uneven lines and uncertain beginnings.
Then I looked at her.
“Yes,” I said.
Because this time—
May you like
We weren’t waiting for something to save us.
We were building something that could.
