Chapter 10 - The Gala of Heroes.

Evelyn reopened the mansion before sunset and announced that the annual Valor House gala would continue as planned.
The decision seemed irrational until Claire understood its purpose.
Two hundred donors, officers, judges, and contractors would gather beneath the chandeliers.
Several of those guests appeared in the hidden files from Room Seventeen.
They had approved foreclosures, silenced complaints, or purchased stolen properties below market value.
Others were innocent donors whose reputations Evelyn planned to use as a shield.
If investigators stormed the gala without undeniable evidence, she would call it political persecution before a room filled with influential witnesses.
Claire needed Evelyn to expose herself publicly.
That required walking back into the house while every instinct told her to stay beside armed agents.
Evelyn needed witnesses to see her as untouchable.
She also needed the crowd to conceal Daniel’s transfer through the estate.
Kessler refused to cooperate after his arrest, but his van logs revealed a route to a private clinic outside the city.
The clinic reported Daniel discharged into Ethan’s custody.
Claire listened to the recording twice.
Her husband had signed for the father she believed dead.
“He told me Evelyn was taking him there.”
“He may have been trying to warn you.”
Mara offered the possibility carefully.
“Or he wanted me to follow exactly where they planned.”
Claire changed into a replacement dark green blouse and beige trousers supplied by an agent.
She refused a protective vest because it distorted the hidden microphone beneath the silk.
Jonah objected until she reminded him that Evelyn already knew every official face on the task force.
Claire entered the gala through the same foyer where the cane had knocked her down.
The marble had been polished clean.
Not one audit page remained.
Evelyn stood at the foot of the grand staircase in her burgundy jacket, holding a different wooden cane.
She greeted Claire as if welcoming a beloved relative.
“How brave of you to come.”
“Where is my father?”
“First, we correct the story you told about me.”
Evelyn tapped a glass, and the orchestra stopped.
She guided Claire onto the central platform before a wall of military portraits.
Guests whispered when they recognized the accused woman from the news.
Ethan stood beside the podium with his phone in his hand and his eyes fixed on the floor.
Evelyn projected the forged transfers behind them.
“My family has suffered a profound betrayal.”
She described Claire’s supposed greed in a voice polished by decades of command.
Then she placed a confession on the podium.
“Sign this, return the stolen funds, and your father receives the medicine keeping him alive.”
Claire heard outrage ripple through the guests, but no one moved.
Power protected itself through silence.
“You built Valor House by stealing veterans’ homes.”
Claire spoke directly into the microphone.
“And you framed anyone who discovered it.”
Evelyn’s smile did not change.
“Ethan, tell them who authorized the offshore transfer.”
Claire looked at her husband.
This was the moment he could expose his mother.
Ethan raised his head.
“Claire did.”
The hidden microphone beneath Claire’s blouse went dead.
Evelyn had jammed the signal.
Security officers closed around Claire as donors lifted their phones to record her disgrace.
Then a weak voice came through the ballroom speakers.
“My daughter did no such thing.”
May you like
The portrait wall slid open.
Daniel Rowan stood behind it, alive and holding the master black ledger.
