Chapter 13 - Your Last Command.

Fifty-nine seconds remained when Claire reached the control column.
The secure phone showed no signal through the vault walls.
Ethan pulled at the incineration drawer, but the heat lock had engaged.
Daniel lowered himself against the steel column, his weakened leg unable to hold him.
“Thomas designed a dead-man circuit.”
He pointed to the cane slot.
“Remove the spike during deletion, and the vault sends a copy.”
“The cane is outside with Evelyn.”
Claire searched the circular room.
Forty-seven seconds remained.
Ethan struck the drawer release with a fire extinguisher until the latch bent.
He pulled out the burning ledger and smothered it beneath his jacket.
The pages inside were blank.
Claire stared at him.
“You switched it.”
“Daniel gave me the decoy before he stepped into the ballroom.”
The original ledger was folded beneath Ethan’s shirt.
For once, the deception had protected rather than destroyed her.
It did not restore Claire’s trust, but it gave her an idea.
The ledger’s pierced center matched the diameter of the cane slot.
The steel spike had punched through a hidden brass binding rod.
Claire tore the rod from the book and inserted it into the control column.
Thirty-one seconds remained.
The system rejected it.
“It needs the commander’s biometric contact.”
Daniel pointed to a dark sensor beside the slot.
Claire remembered Evelyn gripping the original cane before Mara sealed it.
Skin oil and a trace of blood from Claire’s shoulder still coated the carved handle in evidence storage.
Her phone had photographed the forensic scan when the preservation order began.
That automated record had seemed excessive when Claire designed the protocol.
Now it was the only surviving copy of Evelyn’s biometric trace.
The general had underestimated systems that documented ordinary details without asking permission from powerful people.
For years, she had altered signatures, rewritten messages, and made witnesses doubt their own memories.
The phone did not care about medals, family names, or command rank.
It remembered the hand that held the cane.
Claire opened the cached image and placed the screen against the optical sensor.
Fifteen seconds remained.
COMMANDER VERIFIED appeared.
Ethan turned the brass rod.
The countdown stopped at three.
The vault copied its archive to the joint Military Police and Financial Crimes servers.
Above them, alarms began ringing through the mansion.
The elevator reopened to reveal Evelyn surrounded by Mara’s officers.
She still held the replacement cane.
“Stand down.”
Evelyn’s command carried the force of a lifetime.
No one moved.
Her expression shifted from authority to disbelief.
She pointed the cane at Claire and rushed forward.
Claire caught the wood with both hands before the steel tip reached her.
They stood inches apart, reflected together in the polished elevator doors.
“You should have signed when I gave you the chance.”
Evelyn’s voice shook.
“You should have stopped when they gave you a uniform.”
Claire pulled the cane free and handed it to Mara.
Officers secured Evelyn’s wrists.
The retired general looked to Ethan for rescue.
He stepped beside Claire instead.
As Mara led Evelyn away, the cane emitted a faint mechanical click.
A second compartment opened inside its handle.
The tiny recorder within it was still running.

It had captured every order Evelyn gave in the vault and a voice from eighteen years earlier.
Thomas Vale was about to confess.
