The Truth Beneath the Frosting

The ballroom no longer felt like a place of celebration.
It felt like a crime scene.
Guests whispered in stunned disbelief as police officers pulled the groom to his feet. His once-perfect suit was wrinkled, his expression stripped of charm and replaced with something darkerâsomething desperate.
The bride couldnât move.
Her eyes were locked on her Maid of Honor.
âTell me itâs not true,â she whispered, her voice barely audible over the chaos.
The Maid of HonorâLenaâfinally looked up. Tears welled in her eyes, but she didnât deny it.
âI didnât want to,â Lena said, her voice trembling. âYou have to believe me.â
The bride took a step back as if struck.
âThen why?â she demanded. âWhy would you do this to me?â
Before Lena could answer, the groom let out a bitter laugh.
âShe doesnât know, does she?â he sneered.
âShut up!â Lena snapped, panic flashing across her face.
But it was too late.
âYour perfect little life,â the groom continued, his voice cold. âYour inheritance. Your fatherâs company. You really think all of that was just going to be yours forever?â
The brideâs heart pounded.
âWhat are you talking about?â
The doctor who had tested the frosting stepped forward again, his face grave.
âThat wasnât poison meant to kill,â he explained. âIt was a powerful sedative. Enough to hospitalize dozens of people.â
A horrifying realization dawned.
âYou were going to make everyone sickâŠâ the bride whispered.
âAnd then?â she demanded.
The groom smirked.
âAnd then lawsuits. Scandal. Your family business ruined overnight. Insurance claims denied. Stocks crash. And guess who steps in to âhelpâ clean up the mess?â
The room went ice cold.
âYou,â she said.
âAnd her,â he added, nodding toward Lena.
The bride turned slowly, her heart shattering.
âYou were part of this?â
Lena broke.
âThey said theyâd hurt my brother!â she cried. âI had no choice!â
Silence fell again.
For the first time, the bride saw not just betrayalâbut fear.
