Chapter 11 - Locker 318.

The old Sterling hotel had closed for renovation the previous winter.

Most of the lobby furniture was covered in white sheets, and the marble floor echoed beneath every step.

Grant brought Mara, Simon, Owen, and Evelyn through the employee entrance.

Noah stayed safely at the estate with Mrs. Ellis after making Grant promise to tell him what they found.

Locker 318 was in a row of old staff storage units beneath the ballroom level.

Grant slid the small key into the lock.

It turned.

Inside was a brown document case.

Mara stared at it.

"I know that case."

Grant looked at her.

"From where?"

"Simon gave it to me five years ago."

Simon stepped closer.

"That's impossible."

"You gave me copies of the trust statements in a case just like that."

Simon opened it.

The first folder contained duplicate statements from Noah's trust.

The second contained payment approvals.

The third contained copies of emails between Charles and Martin.

Grant read the first email.

Move the temporary transfer before G.S. returns from London.

The initials were obvious.

Grant Sterling.

The next email was from Martin.

Done.

Make sure Reed does not receive the quarterly statement.

Mara sat down on the edge of a covered chair.

For five years she had been told she imagined the significance of what she had seen.

Now the proof was sitting in her lap.

Grant kept reading.

One exchange was dated the night before Mara left the estate.

Charles wrote:

Evelyn wants two weeks of distance.

Use it.

Martin answered:

Two weeks is enough if the custody filing moves first.

Grant slammed the folder shut.

Evelyn looked as though the words had physically struck her.

"They used my order."

Mara looked at her.

"You gave them the door."

Evelyn nodded.

"And they locked it behind you."

No one tried to make the sentence softer.

Simon opened a final envelope.

Inside was a notarized statement bearing his own name.

He read it twice.

"This is forged."

Grant looked over his shoulder.

The statement claimed Simon had reviewed the trust transfers and found them legitimate.

"Did you ever sign anything like this?"

"No."

Mara stared at the growing pile.

"How many people did they imitate?"

Owen answered quietly.

"Enough to make every lie look official."

Grant's phone buzzed.

Helen Ross from the board had sent a message.

Independent counsel has been appointed.

Martin has been placed on administrative leave pending review.

Grant showed Evelyn.

She exhaled for the first time in several minutes.

Mara did not celebrate.

"Charles is still missing."

Owen nodded.

"And so is the material he removed from box 714."

Simon lifted the brown case.

"He may not realize these duplicates survived."

"He will now," Grant said.

Everyone looked at him.

He held up his phone.

A photograph had just appeared online.

It showed Grant, Mara, and Evelyn entering the closed hotel through the side door twenty minutes earlier.

Someone was still watching them.

Mara turned toward the corridor.

"Then we should leave."

Grant shook his head.

"Not yet."

He looked at Owen.

"Who has access to the hotel security system?"

"The renovation contractor, corporate security, and executive management."

"Martin?"

"Until this morning, yes."

Simon frowned.

"If someone can see us, maybe we can see them."

Owen opened the security control room.

Most cameras were inactive during construction.

Three still worked.

The loading dock camera showed an empty alley.

The lobby camera showed covered furniture.

The basement corridor camera showed a figure standing at the far end of the hall.

Grant leaned closer to the monitor.

The man wore a dark overcoat and held a familiar leather briefcase.

Charles Vane.

He was inside the hotel.

Owen immediately moved toward the door.

Grant stopped him.

"No confrontation."

Owen nodded.

"I'll call the authorities and secure the exits."

Mara looked at the screen.

Charles was walking toward the old records office.

Simon suddenly understood.

"He came back for something."

Grant looked at him.

"What?"

Simon pointed toward the floor plan.

"The original signing logs from the London transaction."

Grant stared at the basement corridor on the monitor.

May you like

If those logs showed which pages he had actually signed, they could prove whether Charles had slipped the trust authorization into the packet.

Then the camera image went black.
