Chapter 5 - The Cameras Outside.

Grant ended the call without answering Charles.
For several seconds, only the soft ticking of the old study clock filled the room.
Then security chief Owen Blake entered without knocking.
"We have a problem."
Grant looked at him.
"How many?"
"At least forty reporters outside the gates."
Mara's shoulders stiffened.
"Already?"
Owen nodded.
"The ballroom video is everywhere."
Grant looked toward Noah.
"Keep him away from the windows."
Noah frowned.
"Why?"
Grant crouched beside him.
"Because a lot of people want to ask questions, and tonight you don't have to answer any of them."
Noah considered that.
"Can Mom stay?"
Grant looked at Mara.
She did not look away.
"Yes," he said.
Noah finally relaxed.
Owen placed a tablet on the desk.
The screen showed headlines appearing one after another.
MYSTERY SERVER CALLED MOM AT STERLING GALA.
WHO IS MARA REED?
STERLING FAMILY NIGHT ENDS WITH UNEXPECTED REUNION.
Mara stopped scrolling.
"This one."
A new article had appeared less than two minutes earlier.
It claimed Mara had deliberately taken a banquet job to gain access to Noah and embarrass Grant during a public event.
The article quoted an unnamed source close to the Sterling family.
Grant's jaw tightened.
"Charles."
Evelyn shook her head.
"He would use someone else."
Mara kept reading.
The article included details that were not public.
It mentioned the old custody dispute.
It mentioned the financial investigator Mara had met five years earlier.
Then it made a more damaging claim.
It said Mara had previously demanded money in exchange for staying silent about the family.
"That never happened," Mara said.
Grant believed her immediately, which surprised them both.
He turned to Owen.
"Find out who provided this."
Owen nodded.
"There's something else."
He tapped the screen.
A photograph appeared.
It showed Mara entering the Sterling hotel through a service entrance that afternoon.
Beside her walked a gray-haired man carrying a briefcase.
Grant recognized him.
"Simon Vale."
Mara nodded.
Simon had once been the accountant who reviewed Noah's trust.
He had disappeared from Sterling business records shortly after Mara left.
"He got me the banquet job," Mara said.
Grant stared at her.
"You planned to be there tonight."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me that in the ballroom?"
"Because I did not plan for Noah to see me."
Grant's voice sharpened.
"You entered a room where my son was standing in front of cameras."
"Our son."
The correction landed hard.
Mara continued before he could answer.
"Simon told me Charles would attend tonight carrying records related to the trust."
"So you came for Charles?"
"I came for evidence."
"And Noah just happened to recognize you?"
Mara's eyes flashed.
"Do you think I wanted my first moment with him in five years to happen while I was carrying a tray?"
Grant went silent.
Noah appeared in the doorway.
He had heard enough to understand the tone even if he did not understand the details.
"Are you mad at Mom?"
Grant's face changed immediately.
"No."
Mara looked at him.
Grant corrected himself.
"I'm mad that none of us knows the full truth yet."
Noah walked to Mara's side.
"I know one truth."
Everyone looked at him.
"She came back."
Mara blinked quickly.
Owen's phone buzzed.
He read the message and swore under his breath before catching himself.
"Simon Vale is outside the east gate."
Mara stepped forward.
"Let him in."
Owen did not move.
"He says he won't come through the main entrance."
"Why?"
"Because he believes someone followed him."
Grant looked toward the dark windows.
"Bring him through the service tunnel."
Ten minutes later, Simon entered the study carrying the same briefcase from the photograph.
Rain covered his coat.
He locked the door behind himself.
"We don't have much time."
Grant's expression hardened.
"You vanished five years ago."
Simon placed the briefcase on the desk.
"I was encouraged to vanish."
He opened it.
Inside were bank records, photocopied signatures, and a small digital recorder.
Mara leaned forward.
"Is that what I think it is?"
Simon nodded.
"A conversation from the week before your custody hearing."
Evelyn turned pale.
Grant looked at her.
Simon pressed play.
Charles Vane's voice filled the room.
Then another voice answered him.
It was Evelyn's.
"Keep Mara away from Grant until the offering closes."
Evelyn shut her eyes.
The recording continued.
Charles laughed softly.
"Once she's gone, Mrs. Sterling, I can make sure she stays gone."
There was a pause.

Then Evelyn said the sentence that changed the room again.
"Do whatever you have to do."
