CHAPTER 2: THE NAME THAT SHOULD HAVE STAYED BURIED

By sunrise, Alexander had already gathered more information than the police could in a week.

Javier’s family wasn’t just wealthy.

They were strategic.

Connected.

And very careful.

But not careful enough.

“There’s something off about Carmen Robles,” Alexander said, placing a file on the table.

I frowned. “We already know she’s a monster.”

“No,” he replied. “I mean legally… she shouldn’t exist the way she does.”

He opened the file.

Inside were old records. Photos. Reports.

And one name that made my stomach drop.

“Marisol Vega.”

Sofia leaned forward. “Who is that?”

Alexander’s voice lowered.

“She was declared dead twelve years ago.”

Silence filled the room.

“But her face…” he continued, sliding a photo forward, “…is identical to Carmen Robles.”

My hands began to shake.

“That’s not possible.”

Alexander looked at me.

“I thought so too.”

He paused.

“Until I realized… I’ve seen her before.”
