Maldives Joins Growing List of Nations Restricting Israeli Passports—A Risky but Symbolic Move

The Maldives has taken a bold diplomatic step, becoming the latest country to prohibit entry for Israeli passport holders. This move places the island nation among a group of countries enforcing similar restrictions—and it may signal a broader shift in global travel and political dynamics.

This decision is not without precedent. Several nations, including Algeria, Bangladesh, Brunei, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Yemen, have long maintained policies limiting or banning entry for Israeli citizens. In many cases, these restrictions are rooted in decades-old political conflicts and unresolved regional tensions.

However, what makes the Maldives’ decision particularly striking is the level of risk involved.

Unlike many of the countries with similar policies, the Maldives relies heavily on international tourism as a cornerstone of its economy, with the sector contributing roughly one-fifth of its GDP.

Despite this dependency, lawmakers approved the ban unanimously, presenting it as a gesture of support for Palestinians and a response to the humanitarian situation in Gaza. Israel has firmly rejected accusations of genocide, adding to the complexity of the issue.

This development marks a notable turning point:
