The silence in the lobby was suffocating.
Vanessa Caldwell’s confident smile cracked as murmurs spread among the guests. The manager, who had been standing nearby, suddenly rushed forward—his face pale.
“Ma’am… Mrs. Whitmore…” he stammered, bowing slightly to the old woman.
Vanessa’s heart skipped.
Whitmore.
The name echoed like thunder in her mind. The Whitmore Group owned half the city’s most luxurious properties—this hotel included.
Her husband had mentioned it once. Only once.
And she had never imagined…
The old woman turned her gaze back to Vanessa, calm but piercing.
“You were quick to judge,” she said quietly. “Very quick.”
Vanessa swallowed, forcing a laugh. “There must be some misunderstanding—”
“There isn’t,” the old woman interrupted. “I came here to see what kind of person my son married.”
