CHAPTER 1 — THE TRUTH SHE COULDN’T AFFORD
Eleanor didn’t answer right away.
Rain dripped from the edge of the awning, tapping against the concrete like a clock counting down something fragile.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” Maxwell repeated, quieter this time—not demanding, but wounded.
Eleanor adjusted Sophie on her hip, her fingers instinctively brushing the child’s damp hair back.
“Because I didn’t have the luxury of falling apart,” she said finally. “And you… you don’t do well with broken things, Max.”
The words landed harder than any accusation.
Maxwell took a step closer, stopping himself before crossing the invisible line she had drawn between them.
“I would have helped.”
Eleanor let out a small, humorless breath. “You would have tried to fix it. There’s a difference.”
Sophie stirred, her small hand gripping Eleanor’s coat.
“Mommy… tired.”
Eleanor’s expression softened instantly. “I know, baby.”
Maxwell watched that transformation—the steel fading into something gentle—and felt something twist painfully inside him.
“She’s sick,” he said, more to himself than her.
“She’s been fighting an infection for a week,” Eleanor replied. “Fever won’t break.”
“And you couldn’t pay for the medication.”
Eleanor didn’t deny it.
Maxwell ran a hand through his rain-damp hair, something he hadn’t done in years—not in boardrooms, not in negotiations.
“I’m taking you to a doctor. A real one. Tonight.”
“No.”
“Eleanor—”
“No, Max,” she said firmly. “You don’t get to walk back into our lives and take control.”
“Our lives?” he echoed, his voice tightening.
Her silence answered him.
Maxwell exhaled slowly, forcing himself to think, not react.
“Then let me help without taking control,” he said. “Let me do something right.”
Eleanor hesitated.
Not because she trusted him.
But because Sophie’s small body felt too warm against her.
“Just tonight,” she said quietly. “For her.”
Maxwell nodded once.
