CHAPTER 3 — A SECOND CHANCE, BUILT SLOWLY

Spring came quietly to Boston.

Sophie was healthy again—running, laughing, insisting Maxwell read the same story three times in a row.

“Again!” she demanded, climbing into his lap.

Maxwell, a man who once measured time in millions, now counted it in bedtime stories and tiny giggles.

Eleanor watched from the doorway.

She hadn’t expected this.

Hadn’t expected him to show up every day.

Not with grand gestures—but with consistency.

Doctor visits. Groceries. Sitting on the floor building blocks like it was the most important meeting of his life.

“You’re late,” she said one evening as he walked in, slightly out of breath.

“Board meeting,” he admitted. “I left early.”

“For this?” she asked, gesturing to their small apartment.

“For you,” he corrected gently. “For both of you.”

Sophie ran to him. “Daddy!”

The word still caught him off guard.

Still felt like something sacred.

Later that night, after Sophie fell asleep, Eleanor stood by the window.

“You can’t fix the past,” she said.

“I’m not trying to,” Maxwell replied. “I’m trying to earn the future.”

She turned to him.

“Slowly,” she warned.

He nodded. “As slow as you need.”

Months passed.

Then one day, Eleanor handed him a key.

Not to a mansion.

Not to a perfect life.

But to a home.

“You don’t get to lose this again,” she said.

Maxwell took the key like it was the most valuable thing he had ever held.

“I won’t,” he promised.

And this time—

He meant it.

Outside, Sophie’s laughter filled the room.

Inside, something broken finally healed.
