Chapter 6: Becoming a Family

The paperwork took months.
Background checks. Home studies. Legal hearings.
But Peter didn’t miss a single appointment.
He learned how to braid Lily’s hair.
He learned Drew needed the hallway light on to sleep.
He learned that “I’m fine” meant “please don’t leave.”
The day the judge signed the final papers, Lily climbed into Peter’s lap.
“Does this mean we stay?”
Peter swallowed hard.
“It means you’re home.”
