Javier showed up two days later.

Not with flowers.

Not with apologies.

But with fear written all over his face.

“I didn’t know she’d go that far,” he said, standing in my doorway.

Sofia didn’t look at him.

“Leave,” she said.

“I love you,” he insisted.

That was when Alexander stepped forward.

“You loved her,” he said calmly, “enough to let her be beaten.”

Javier opened his mouth—but no words came out.

Because there were none.

Sofia finally looked at him.
