Chapter 2 - Dinner for Two.

Lily chose a booth beside the restaurant window, where tiny lights from passing cars moved across the glass like quiet stars.

She studied the menu with the seriousness of someone who had been told too often not to ask for much.

Charlotte watched her trace the photographs with one finger.

"You can order what you want."

Lily looked up cautiously.

"Even the chicken dinner?"

"Especially the chicken dinner."

When the server walked away, Charlotte placed her phone facedown, but it vibrated against the table almost immediately.

Daniel called once, twice, and then a third time.

Eleanor's name followed.

Charlotte silenced both numbers.

Lily twisted the paper wrapper around her straw.

"Is Dad mad?"

"Daniel is surprised because I changed something he thought would never change."

"Is that bad?"

Charlotte considered the question.

"Sometimes surprise is what happens when a person finally meets a boundary."

Lily nodded without fully understanding, then stared at the empty chair opposite her.

"Did he know I was in the corner?"

Charlotte wished she could offer an easy answer.

Daniel had seen the narrow chair, the noodles, and the empty place beside him.

He had known enough to object, yet he had chosen comfort instead.

"He saw where you were sitting," Charlotte said gently.

Lily's eyes dropped.

"Then why didn't he come get me?"

Before Charlotte could answer, the server returned with warm bread, butter, and a small bowl of soup.

Lily's expression brightened, but the question remained between them.

Charlotte unlocked her phone and checked the account history.

The most recent charge came from Bellweather Seafood Market for nine hundred forty dollars.

Another charge showed a floral delivery to Eleanor's home.

A third showed a payment toward Daniel's private club membership.

None of those purchases had been discussed with Charlotte.

She scrolled farther and found weeks of transfers carrying harmless labels such as household, repairs, and insurance.

The money had not gone to any account she recognized.

Her concern sharpened into cold attention.

She downloaded the statements and forwarded them to her private business email.

Then Daniel sent a message.

You embarrassed me in front of everyone.

Charlotte read it twice.

He did not ask whether Lily had eaten.

He did not apologize.

He did not mention the sentence his mother had spoken.

He asked only why his access had disappeared.

Charlotte typed a response.

Lily was excluded from your family table while you watched.

We will discuss everything tomorrow with records in front of us.

Daniel's answer arrived at once.

You cannot lock your husband out of family money.

Charlotte looked at the banking screen, where the primary account holder was displayed in clear letters.

"It wasn't family money when I earned it alone," she murmured.

Lily's dinner arrived, filling the booth with the scent of roasted chicken and herbs.

The girl took one bite and closed her eyes with relief.

"This is really good."

Charlotte reached across the table and squeezed her hand.

"You should never have had to earn a place beside me."

Her phone vibrated again, but this time the alert came from the bank's security department.

A new user had attempted to reset the account credentials.

The request had been initiated from Daniel's phone.

Charlotte declined it.

While Lily waited for dessert, she described other moments Charlotte had missed, including a family picnic where Eleanor served every child lemonade except her and a holiday photograph in which someone asked Lily to stand behind the taller cousins.

Each event had seemed minor in isolation, especially after Daniel supplied a quick explanation, but together they formed a pattern Charlotte could no longer dismiss.

Charlotte asked why Lily had never told her, and the girl said she did not want to create trouble between her mother and Daniel.

The answer filled Charlotte with both tenderness and regret because an eight-year-old had been protecting adults who had failed to protect her.

She explained that telling the truth about unkind treatment was not causing trouble, and that Lily would never be responsible for managing a grown person's reaction.

Lily repeated the sentence slowly, testing whether it was safe to believe.

When Charlotte confirmed it again, the girl's shoulders relaxed for the first time that evening.

The blocked accounts were only the visible boundary; this conversation was the beginning of a more important one.

Then the screen displayed a detail that made her sit perfectly still.

The recovery email did not belong to Daniel.

It belonged to Eleanor Hawthorne.
