Chapter 5 - The House Meeting.

Daniel asked Charlotte to meet him at the house that afternoon.
Rachel advised against going alone, so Charlotte brought her and left Lily with Rosa.
The Hawthorne home looked unchanged from the street, but Charlotte no longer saw comfort in its stone columns and perfect windows.
She saw a stage built to hide debt.
Daniel waited in the living room without his jacket, his sleeves rolled up as though exhaustion might excuse him.
Eleanor sat on the sofa with a folder balanced on her knees.
"You brought an attorney," she said.
"You brought paperwork to my dinner," Charlotte replied.
Daniel looked confused until Rachel placed a copy of the digital certificate on the coffee table.
Eleanor's expression did not change.
"That proves my tablet used the household network. Nothing more."
"It proves enough for the bank to stop the transfer," Rachel said.
Daniel turned toward his mother.
"What transfer?"
For the first time, Charlotte wondered whether Daniel understood the full plan.
Eleanor closed the folder.
"The company required temporary support. I handled it."
"With Charlotte's account?" Daniel asked.
"With family resources."
Charlotte's voice remained even.
"You isolated my daughter and told her my money belonged to Daniel. Then you attempted to move nearly two hundred thousand dollars without permission."
Eleanor dismissed the accusation with a small wave.
"Lily needed to understand the order of the household."
Daniel flinched at the sentence.
"Mom, she is eight."
"And you are thirty-one, yet you still need reminders about responsibility."
The remark landed between them like a private history suddenly made visible.
Rachel asked Daniel whether he had submitted the trust authorization form.
He admitted bringing it to Maya but claimed Eleanor had told him Charlotte had already approved it.
"The signature looked like yours," he said.
"You write my middle initial exactly that way," Charlotte answered.
Daniel stared at the page.
"Are you saying I made it?"
"I'm asking why you delivered it without speaking to me."
He looked away.
"Because I knew you would say no."
The honesty was worse than a denial.
Daniel had not needed to create the false form to betray her trust.
He had chosen to carry it because secrecy gave him the answer he wanted.
Eleanor rose and opened the folder on her knees.
Inside were copies of Charlotte's business contracts, tax summaries, and private insurance documents.
"Our family has invested time and reputation in this marriage," she said.
"You do not get to walk away with everything."
Rachel stood as well.
"Those records are not yours to possess."
Eleanor smiled faintly.
"They were found in this house."
Charlotte recognized the documents as copies from the locked cabinet in her home office.
Only Daniel knew where the spare key was kept.
She looked at him, and the shame on his face answered before he spoke.
"I gave Mom the key once," he admitted.
"She said she needed our insurance information."
Charlotte felt the marriage change shape in that instant.
Before she could respond, Rachel's phone rang.
The attorney listened, thanked the caller, and ended the call.
"The bank found a second pending instruction," she said.
Before leaving the house meeting, Charlotte entered her former home office with Rachel and found the locked cabinet standing slightly open.
The room still contained Lily's colored pencils, a framed photograph from Charlotte's first company launch, and the desk where Daniel once helped her assemble furniture late into the night.
Seeing ordinary memories beside the violated cabinet made the intrusion feel more intimate than any number on a statement.
Rachel photographed the lock, the key drawer, and the faint scratches surrounding the cabinet handle.
Charlotte removed only the personal items Lily might miss and left the rest untouched for documentation.
Daniel watched from the doorway but did not ask whether she was coming back.
He seemed to understand that the answer could not be found in an apology offered while evidence was still appearing.
When Charlotte lifted the company photograph, she noticed the spare cabinet key taped behind its frame, even though Daniel had claimed Eleanor received the only copy.
That meant someone had entered the room using a key Charlotte had never known existed.
"It is not a transfer."
Rachel turned to Charlotte.
"Someone applied for a business loan in your company's name."
