Chapter 14 - The Vows That Never Happened.
By sunrise, the wedding decorations had become evidence.
Police photographed the pier, the bridal suite, the damaged cameras, the bracelet, the phones, and every message recovered from the drive.
Damian refused to speak without an attorney.
Patricia confessed to helping conceal the fraud but denied knowing Damian intended Sophia to die.
Celeste admitted to the affair, the planted bracelet, and the order to frighten Ruby.
Lila gave the final piece.
She had taken Ruby to the west railing as instructed.
She had expected to point toward a hidden gift and tell the child to stop talking about what she saw.
But Damian had appeared behind them.
"He told me to leave," Lila said.
"I didn't want to."
"Why did you?" Elena asked.
Lila looked ashamed.
"Because he showed me a photograph of my brother and said he knew where my family lived."
She walked away for less than a minute.
When she looked back, Ruby was in the water.
Damian was gone.
"Did you see him push her?" Marcus asked.
Lila shook her head.
"No."
Ruby was the only one who knew what happened during those seconds.
Elena did not force her to speak.
Instead, a child specialist from the mainland sat with Ruby in a quiet room and let her describe the event at her own pace.
Ruby said Damian had crouched beside her.
He asked whether she remembered the "secret from last night."
When she said yes, he told her to look down at the water.
Then he grabbed the back of her dress.
Ruby thought he was stopping her from falling.
Instead, he whispered, "Some secrets sink."
Then he let go.
He did not need to shove her.
He only needed to release a frightened child leaning over a railing.
The ripped satin in Ruby's hand had come from the decorative ribbon Damian had taken from Lila's shoe after threatening her.
He had planted it to frame her if anything went wrong.
The entire plan had layers.
If Ruby drowned, it would look like a tragic accident caused by a child wandering away after stealing a bracelet.
If she survived, Lila would be blamed.
If Elena objected, Damian planned to release fabricated financial evidence making her look unstable and corrupt.
If Marcus proceeded with the marriage, Celeste would gain temporary voting power after Damian engineered a medical "incident" during the honeymoon.
Elena listened to investigators describe the scheme and felt sick at how close it had come to working.
Marcus stood beside her on the empty pier.
The wedding arch still faced the ocean.
He reached up and pulled the white fabric from it.
"I thought this was the beginning of my life."
Elena looked at Ruby playing safely farther up the beach with a counselor.
"Maybe it was."
Marcus looked at her.
"Just not the life you expected."
He gave a tired laugh.
Then he turned serious.
"I blamed you last night."
"You were angry."
"I was wrong."
Elena shook her head.
"I did hide Sophia's investigation."
"And you admitted it."
Marcus looked toward Ruby.
"They lied because they wanted control. You hid something because you were afraid. Those aren't the same, but neither one can happen again."
Elena nodded.
"Agreed."
A police officer approached with one final update.
Damian had requested to speak with Marcus.
Only Marcus.
Elena did not like it.
Marcus went anyway, with investigators watching.
Damian sat behind glass in a temporary interview room.
He smiled when Marcus entered.
"You think you won."
Marcus remained standing.
"My family is alive. That's enough."
Damian leaned forward.
"Then you should ask Elena one last question."
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"Which is?"
