Chapter 8 - The Plan After the Vows.

Marcus walked out of the conference room without a word.

Elena followed him to the empty ballroom.

The reception tables were still set beneath crystal lights.

Two hundred candles waited to be lit for a celebration that would never happen.

Marcus stopped beside the untouched wedding cake.

"How long?"

Elena knew what he meant.

"We don't know yet."

"How long were they together?"

"Marcus."

He looked at her.

His face held humiliation, grief, and rage in equal measure.

"I was about to marry her."

Elena stepped closer.

"And you didn't."

"Because Ruby almost drowned."

"Because Ruby survived."

That distinction stopped him.

Elena continued.

"We find out what she heard, and then we protect her."

Marcus nodded slowly.

When Ruby woke, they did not interrogate her.

Elena sat on the carpet and let the child draw with crayons.

Marcus sat several feet away so she would not feel surrounded.

Ruby drew the pier first.

Then a stick figure in a white dress.

Then a black figure beside it.

She put a red heart between them.

Marcus looked away.

Elena kept her voice gentle.

"Did you see them together last night?"

Ruby nodded.

"They were whispering."

"Do you remember any words?"

Ruby colored the ocean blue.

"He said after the wedding, Uncle Marcus wouldn't be the boss anymore."

Marcus's head snapped up.

"What else?"

Ruby frowned.

"The lady said Aunt Elena would fight."

"And then?"

"He said she couldn't fight if everybody thought she stole money."

Elena went cold.

The accusation was larger than the wedding.

Tomas brought the family company's remote legal counsel onto a secure video call.

Within twenty minutes, they discovered a document Marcus had electronically signed three days earlier.

He believed it was a routine restructuring agreement before his honeymoon.

Buried in the attachments was an emergency voting proxy.

If Marcus became medically incapacitated within thirty days of the marriage, control of his voting shares would pass temporarily to his spouse.

Celeste.

If fraud allegations simultaneously suspended Elena from the board, the spouse would control enough votes to appoint a new chief executive.

Marcus stared at the screen.

"Who prepared this?"

The lawyer answered carefully.

"The draft came from Mr. Cross's office."

Damian.

Elena felt the plan take shape.

The affair was only part of it.

The wedding was a corporate takeover disguised as a romance.

Marcus stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

"Freeze every nonessential transfer."

The lawyer hesitated.

"There is already a pending transfer."

"How much?"

"Forty-eight million dollars."

Elena stared at the screen.

"To where?"

"A holding company in the Cayman Islands."

Marcus swore under his breath.

"Cancel it."

"We are trying."

"What do you mean trying?"

The lawyer looked alarmed.

"It requires a second authorization."

Elena already knew the answer.

"Damian's?"

"Yes."

Marcus turned toward the ballroom doors.

A security guard rushed in before he could move.

"Mr. Hale, Damian Cross is gone."

Elena stood.

"What about Celeste?"

The guard's silence was answer enough.

"She's gone too."

Thunder rolled over the ocean.

Tomas checked the marina feed.

One maintenance boat was missing.

Elena looked out through the glass doors toward the darkening water.

"They're not escaping."

Marcus grabbed his jacket.

"Then where are they going?"

Ruby looked up from her drawing.

"To the little house."

Everyone turned toward her.

"What little house?" Elena asked.

May you like

Ruby pointed through the window toward a small island barely visible beyond the reef.

"The one where the bad man kept Mommy's red box."
