Chapter 1 - The Man Who Walked Away.

The hospital hallway smelled of disinfectant, cold air, and something painfully final.

Emily Carter stood barefoot against the pale blue wall with her newborn daughter pressed to her chest.

Her pink hospital gown hung loosely around her trembling body.

Tears had dried in silver tracks beneath her eyes, but fresh ones kept replacing them.

Twenty yards away, Nathan Cole walked toward the elevator without looking back.

The woman beside him wore a red dress and kept one hand wrapped possessively around his arm.

Emily had begged him only once.

"Nathan, please don't leave her like this."

He had stopped for half a second.

Then he had looked over his shoulder at the tiny pink bundle in Emily's arms.

"I told you I'm not doing this."

The elevator doors had opened.

The woman in red had smiled.

Nathan had stepped inside with her.

That was when Luca Morelli saw everything.

He had been standing near the nurses' station in a black double-breasted suit that looked almost unnatural beneath fluorescent hospital lights.

Dark tattoos covered his hands, climbed his neck, and disappeared beneath his collar.

More ink marked the hard lines of his face.

People noticed him and then quickly found reasons to look somewhere else.

Luca watched the elevator doors close.

His jaw tightened.

"He's a coward."

Emily looked up, startled by the deep voice.

She had not heard him approach.

Luca stopped several feet away, leaving enough space not to frighten her.

His eyes moved from Emily to the baby.

The newborn slept against her mother's chest as though the hallway had not just divided her life into before and after.

Emily wiped her cheek with the back of one hand.

"What kind of person are you?"

Luca's expression did not soften, but something in his eyes did.

"The kind of person who would never leave a child unprotected."

A nurse hurried toward them carrying a thin binder and a birth registration packet.

She looked uncomfortable when she noticed Nathan was gone.

"Ms. Carter, we still need the acknowledgment section completed."

Emily stared at the blank line marked FATHER.

Her face crumpled.

"Leave it empty."

The nurse hesitated.

"You can amend it later."

Luca looked at the page.

Then he looked toward the elevator.

"Give me the pen."

Emily's head snapped toward him.

"What?"

The nurse tightened her grip on the binder.

"Sir, this is a legal document."

"Then don't hand it to me unless you understand I'm serious."

The certainty in his voice made the nurse freeze.

Emily looked terrified rather than comforted.

"You don't even know me."

Luca glanced at the name printed at the top of the form.

EMILY CARTER.

For the first time, his calm expression broke.

A flash of recognition crossed his face.

It was gone almost immediately.

"I know enough."

He took the black pen from the nurse.

His tattooed hand moved across the page with slow, deliberate strokes.

LUCA MORELLI.

The nurse went pale when she read the name.

Emily stared at the signature as though it might disappear if she blinked.

"Why would you do that?"

Luca clipped the paper back into the binder.

"Because he walked away when she needed someone to stay."

Emily looked down at her daughter.

The baby opened one tiny hand and caught the edge of Luca's finger.

Luca stopped breathing for a moment.

Then the elevator behind him chimed.

The doors opened again.

Nathan stepped out with two hospital security officers and a gray-haired attorney.

His face was no longer indifferent.

It was furious.

"Get that man away from my daughter."

Luca slowly turned around.

May you like

Nathan pointed directly at the birth certificate in Luca's hand.

"And get my name back where it belongs."
