Chapter 12 - The Man Behind the Glass.

The stolen hospital van never reached the street.

Police vehicles sealed the garage exits within seconds.

The driver abandoned it on the lowest level and ran into a service tunnel.

Emily locked the rear doors from inside until Luca reached her.

When he opened them, she was sitting on the floor with Grace pressed against her chest.

"I thought you said armored meant safe."

Luca almost smiled despite everything.

"Apparently I need better armor."

Emily stepped down on shaking legs.

Nathan arrived behind him.

The moment Emily saw him, her expression hardened.

"Stay away from us."

Nathan stopped.

"Emily, I didn't know they would take you."

"You knew enough to abandon us."

He had no answer.

Police followed the driver into the service tunnel.

The tunnel connected the hospital to an older administrative building owned by Cole Meridian.

Luca understood the plan immediately.

The kidnappers had never intended to drive Grace out through the public exits.

They wanted to move her underground.

Nathan looked sick.

"My father had that tunnel renovated."

Luca turned toward him.

"When?"

"Last year."

"Before he died?"

Nathan nodded.

Luca looked at Emily.

"Richard planned this long before Grace was born."

The group moved through the tunnel behind police.

Emily was ordered to remain back with Grace.

She refused until Luca finally convinced her to stay with two armed officers at the entrance.

Luca and Nathan continued into the administrative building.

The upper floor was dark except for a conference room glowing behind frosted glass.

A silhouette stood inside.

Nathan stopped breathing.

"Dad?"

The conference room door opened automatically.

An older man sat at the end of a long table.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

A scar crossed his left cheek.

Richard Cole looked very much alive.

Nathan staggered forward.

"You let me think you were dead."

Richard looked at him without warmth.

"You have always believed whatever was easiest."

Luca placed the decoy archive case on the table.

"You threatened a mother and a newborn to get paperwork you wrote yourself."

Richard smiled.

"I didn't write all of it."

He nodded toward the case.

"Your father did."

Luca's expression sharpened.

Richard explained that Vittorio had secretly altered the trust twelve years earlier.

He had inserted Luca as trustee without Richard's final approval.

"Why?"

Richard leaned back.

"Because your father discovered something about my family."

Nathan stepped closer.

"What?"

Richard ignored him.

His eyes stayed on Luca.

"Vittorio discovered that the child my company was built to protect was never Nathan."

The words made no sense.

Then Richard slid an old photograph across the table.

It showed Sofia Morelli holding her newborn son.

Beside her stood Nathan's late mother.

On the back was a hospital identification number.

Luca stared at it.

Richard spoke softly.

"Your nephew wasn't kidnapped for ransom."

Luca's hands went cold.

"Then why?"

Richard smiled without kindness.

"Because he was a Cole."

Nathan's face emptied.

Luca looked from the photograph to Richard.

"Who was his father?"

May you like

Richard finally turned toward Nathan.

"Your older brother."
