Chapter 1: The Heartbeat That Changed Everything

The room felt colder than it should have.
I lay on the examination bed, my fingers trembling as they gripped the thin sheet beneath me. My husband—soon to be ex-husband—stood a few feet away, arms crossed, his expression full of contempt.
“I don’t know why I’m even here,” he muttered. “This has nothing to do with me.”
The doctor didn’t respond immediately. Instead, she adjusted the ultrasound wand, her eyes narrowing at the screen.
Then she froze.
A long silence followed.
“Is… something wrong?” I asked, panic rising in my chest.
The doctor swallowed. Then she looked directly at my husband.
“Come here,” she said, her tone suddenly serious. “You need to see this.”
He scoffed but walked over anyway, clearly annoyed.
The moment his eyes landed on the screen, everything changed.
His face drained of color.
“That’s… that’s impossible,” he whispered.
I turned my head, desperate to understand.
On the screen, two tiny forms flickered.
Twins.
But that wasn’t what shocked him.
The doctor spoke again, slowly and carefully.
“Judging by their development… these babies were conceived at least eight weeks ago.”
My breath caught.
Eight weeks ago…
That was before he started accusing me.
Before he walked out.
Before he brought her into our lives.
His lips trembled. “But… I was the only one…”
The truth hit him all at once.

And for the first time since this nightmare began—
He looked afraid.
