Chapter 14 - The Last File.

Claire forwarded Daniel's threat to Detective Cole and her attorney.
She did not answer him.
By morning, investigators had found an encrypted folder on Daniel's seized laptop labeled C.B.
Daniel supplied the password through his lawyer as part of a proposed cooperation agreement.
Inside were hundreds of scanned documents showing how Claire's signature had been copied and perfected over the years.
Emails from Margaret directed Daniel to use Claire's name because several donors trusted her.
Early messages showed Daniel objecting.
Later messages showed him helping.
The final file was a security video from Daniel's home office three years earlier.
Claire watched herself enter holding bank statements.
"These aren't my signatures."
Daniel answered quietly.
"I know."
Video-Claire threatened to contact the foundation auditor.
Daniel stepped in front of the door.
He did not hit her.
Instead, he reminded her that her brother's business loan and Rebecca's children's tuition assistance were connected to Bennett influence.
Then he said, "If you love this family, you will give me time."
The video ended with Claire sitting down in tears.
Daniel had kept it because it proved she knew about the forged documents years before reporting them.
He intended it as leverage.
Assistant District Attorney Ortiz saw something else.
"This also documents coercion."
Claire looked at her.
"It documents my silence too."
"Yes."
Claire appreciated the honesty.
She gave prosecutors every remaining email, record, and calendar entry she possessed.
She admitted moving the steel box when she still believed Daniel's explanation.
She admitted staying silent too long after discovering the forgery.
The truth did not make her spotless.
It allowed her to accept her own mistakes without carrying theirs.
Harlan eventually admitted altering parts of Richard's investigative file after payments connected to Margaret.
Daniel admitted returning to the lake house and walking away while his father was alive.
He also admitted knowing Margaret had prepared Claire as a fallback if the financial scheme surfaced.
That evening, Rebecca came to Claire with another surprise.
"Mom wants to see you."
Claire shook her head.
"Why?"
Rebecca looked frightened.
"She says Richard's letter got one thing wrong."
Claire almost refused.

Then Rebecca added the sentence that changed her mind.
"She says Daniel didn't start the theft."
