Chapter 9 - The Woman Who Knew.
Margaret Bennett was arrested that afternoon on suspicion of evidence tampering while investigators reviewed Richard's death.
Daniel was not arrested for murder.
That fact enraged Claire more than she expected.
The recording proved he had lied about being at the lake house.
It proved he had fought with his father.
It proved Richard had been hurt before Daniel left.
But it also proved Richard was alive afterward.
Daniel's attorney immediately began shaping the distinction into innocence.
By evening, a television van was parked outside the Bennett Foundation office.
The family scandal had escaped the dining room.
Claire's name appeared online beside words like fraud, death, and secret accounts.
Several articles described her as Daniel Bennett's estranged wife.
One called her a former foundation signatory.
That phrase terrified her.
At Rebecca's apartment, Claire received fourteen missed calls from numbers she did not know.
The fifteenth came from a woman named Evelyn Shaw.
Claire almost ignored it.
Then the voicemail began.
"Mrs. Bennett, my name is Evelyn Shaw."
The woman's voice was tired and urgent.
"I was Richard Bennett's executive assistant."
Claire stopped breathing.
"If the police found his recording, they will think they know what happened."
A pause followed.
"They don't."
Claire called Detective Cole before returning the message.
Within an hour, Cole arranged for Evelyn to meet them at a quiet conference room in a downtown law office.
Evelyn was in her late fifties, with silver-streaked hair and a folder clutched tightly against her coat.
She looked at Claire for a long moment.
"You look different from your photographs."
Claire almost laughed.
"It's been a difficult Christmas."
Evelyn did not smile.
She opened the folder.
Inside were copies of foundation transfer requests dating back seven years.
Some carried Daniel's initials.
Some carried Margaret's authorization.
Several carried Claire's forged signature.
"Richard discovered the missing money six weeks before he died," Evelyn said.
"How much?" Cole asked.
"At first, he thought eight hundred thousand dollars."
Evelyn slid another sheet forward.
"The final number was closer to three point two million."
Claire felt dizzy.
"Where did it go?"
"Northstar Consulting."
Claire recognized the name from the USB files.
Evelyn continued.
"Richard believed Daniel created Northstar to cover personal losses and failed investments."
"Believed?"
Evelyn looked at Claire.
"Until he discovered Daniel wasn't the owner."
She placed a corporate registration record on the table.
The beneficial owner was listed through a trust.
Cole read the name silently.
Then he turned the page toward Claire.
Margaret Bennett.
Claire stared at it.
Margaret had spent years presenting Daniel as the reckless son whose disasters she cleaned up.
But the money trail ran back to her.
"Why would Daniel help her steal from the foundation?"
Evelyn hesitated.
"Because she convinced him the money would be replaced before anyone noticed."
"Was it?"
"Some of it."
"With what?"
Evelyn looked down.
"Money from Richard's life insurance."
Rebecca went pale.
Claire felt something inside the story rearrange itself.
Margaret had benefited from Richard's death.
Cole asked Evelyn why she had stayed silent.
Her eyes filled with shame.
"Because Margaret threatened my son."
Not physically.
Financially.
Evelyn's son had received a foundation scholarship based on records Margaret could make look fraudulent.
She threatened to accuse Evelyn of manipulating the award unless she disappeared quietly.
"So I left."
Evelyn pushed one final envelope across the table.
"But Richard gave me this the afternoon before he died."
Inside was a photocopy of his handwritten letter.
Claire's heart pounded.
The missing lines were finally visible.
Richard wrote that Daniel had participated in the transfers, but only after Margaret told him the foundation was facing temporary liquidity problems.
He wrote that Daniel later discovered the truth and wanted out.
