Chapter 14: The Return of Shadows

Not everyone was grateful for what we built.

One afternoon, a man stood outside the gates, shouting.

“You’re destroying families!” he yelled. “You’re turning women against their husbands!”

Security moved to escort him away.

But I stepped forward.

“Wait.”

The man looked at me, anger burning in his eyes.

“You think you’re helping?” he said. “You’re giving them ideas.”

“No,” I replied calmly. “We’re giving them options.”

He scoffed.

“They belong with their families.”

I held his gaze.

“They belong to themselves.”

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then he turned and walked away.

I didn’t feel victorious.

I felt something else.

Certain.

Because for every voice like his, there were ten more like Lila’s.

Quiet.

May you like

Afraid.

Waiting.
