Chapter 11 - Graham Finally Changed His Story.

Nora agreed to meet Graham only in a public place with Leah nearby.

They chose a quiet cafe in the middle of the afternoon.

Graham arrived early.

He looked as though he had not slept.

For several minutes, he said nothing useful.

He asked whether Nora's ribs were improving.

He complained that Judith was barely eating.

He said Janet had become vindictive.

Nora finally interrupted him.

"Tell me about the lake house."

Graham looked down at his coffee.

"We argued."

"I know."

"You walked outside."

"I know that too."

His fingers tightened around the paper cup.

"I followed you."

Nora waited.

"You were angry."

"So were you."

"Then what happened?"

Graham rubbed his forehead.

"You tried to leave."

A cold heaviness settled in Nora's chest.

"And?"

"I caught your arm."

Nora closed her eyes for a second.

There it was.

A fact she had spent months reducing to something blurry.

"You caught my arm."

"I wasn't trying to hurt you."

"What happened next?"

"You pulled away."

His voice became defensive.

"The step was icy."

"Did I fall because you grabbed me?"

Graham stared at the table.

"I don't know."

Nora's anger rose.

"You were standing there."

"It happened fast."

"Why did you tell everyone I was alone?"

Graham did not answer.

"Why did you tell the insurance company I was alone?"

He looked up.

"Because Mom said if they thought we were fighting, they might make it complicated."

Nora almost laughed.

"Your mother told you to lie."

"She told me to protect the family."

"And you did."

Graham's expression tightened.

"I protected us too."

"No."

Nora leaned back carefully.

"You protected yourself from having to admit what you did."

He lowered his voice.

"I never wanted you hurt."

The sentence was almost identical to what he had said about Judith.

Nora suddenly understood why.

In Graham's world, intent erased consequence.

If he had not planned the injury, he believed he should not have to answer for the behavior that caused it.

If Judith claimed she had not meant for Nora to fall, the shove became unfortunate rather than deliberate.

The family survived by judging themselves only by the intentions they announced afterward.

Nora asked one final question.

"Did you sign my name on the claim?"

Graham's face changed.

"The form needed to be submitted quickly."

"Did you sign it?"

"I handled the paperwork."

"That is not an answer."

Graham's voice sharpened.

"Why are you trying to turn every mistake I've ever made into a crime against you?"

Several people in the cafe looked over.

Nora remained calm.

"Because you keep calling choices mistakes."

Graham stood.

"If you leave me over this, don't pretend you were forced."

Nora looked up at him.

"I wasn't forced to leave."

She paused.

"I was given reasons."

Graham walked out.

Leah joined Nora a minute later.

Before either could speak, Nora's phone vibrated.

It was a message from Uncle Paul.
