Chapter 4 - The Witness Who Was Afraid to Be One.

Nora read Janet's message three times before showing it to Melissa.
The advocate did not celebrate or make promises about what the message could prove.
She simply asked Nora to save it somewhere Graham could not erase it.
Nora forwarded screenshots to Leah and to a private email account Graham did not know about.
Then she locked her phone.
Graham noticed.
"Who are you texting?"
Nora looked at him.
"Why does that matter?"
His expression changed for only a second, but she recognized the irritation beneath the concern.
"Because my mother is terrified."
"I'm the one in a hospital bed."
"I know that."
"Then act like it."
Graham glanced at Melissa as if she were responsible for Nora's tone.
Melissa remained silent.
The doctor stepped out to review discharge instructions, leaving the three of them in a room that suddenly felt far too small.
Graham lowered his voice.
"Nora, whatever Janet thinks she saw, she was across the room."
Nora's pulse jumped.
She had not mentioned Janet.
"How do you know she texted me?"
Graham realized his mistake.
"Mom said Janet was upset."
Nora stared at him.
"You've already called her."
"We're trying to keep everyone calm."
"You're trying to keep everyone quiet."
Graham exhaled sharply.
"There is a difference between protecting your family and lying."
"Then why are you asking everyone to change what they saw?"
He had no answer.
Leah arrived twenty minutes later wearing rain boots and a dark coat, her hair damp from the storm.
She took one look at Nora and stopped in the doorway.
"Oh my God."
Nora shook her head slightly.
"I'm okay."
Leah's eyes moved to Graham.
"No, you're not."
Graham folded his arms.
"This is already being handled."
Leah ignored him and moved beside Nora's bed.
"You're staying with me."
Graham laughed once, without humor.
"She's coming home with her husband."
Nora felt the old reflex to avoid a scene.
Then she remembered the X-rays.
She remembered that her body had been keeping a record even when she had been trained not to.
"I'm going with Leah."
Graham stared at her.
"Nora."
"I'm not going home tonight."
His face hardened.
"Because my mother accidentally touched you on the stairs?"
Leah stepped between them.
"You should probably stop talking."
Graham pointed toward Nora.
"This is my marriage."
Nora's voice came out steadier than she expected.
"Then you should have protected it before you protected the story."
Graham left the room.
The door closed hard enough to make the metal frame tremble.
An hour later, Nora was discharged with instructions to rest, follow up with her doctor, and return immediately if her symptoms worsened.
Leah helped her into the car.
As they pulled away, Nora's phone rang.
It was Janet.
Nora answered.
For several seconds, all she heard was breathing.
Then Janet whispered, "I shouldn't have texted you."
Nora's heart sank.
"Why?"
"Judith knows."
"What did she say to you?"
Janet began crying quietly.
"She said if I spread lies about her, she'll make sure everyone knows what happened with my husband's business years ago."
Nora frowned.
"What does that have to do with this?"
"Nothing."
Janet's voice broke.
"That's how she does it."
Nora gripped the phone.
"Janet, did you see her push me?"
Silence.
Then, very softly, Janet said, "Yes."
May you like
A second later, the call disconnected.
When Nora tried to call back, Janet's phone went straight to voicemail.
