Chapter 11 - What Ethan Heard.

Allison felt the room narrow around her.
She had thought the pressure began beside the picnic table.
It had begun earlier.
"What else did Grandma say?"
Ethan stared at his hands.
"She said Mason needed good news."
Allison pulled the chair beside him closer.
"Did she mention the clinic?"
"Not at first."
"What did she say?"
Ethan took a slow breath.
"She asked if I would still be happy if Mason went instead."
Allison's throat tightened.
"What did you tell her?"
"I said I didn't know."
"Then what?"
"She said I was lucky because I get good grades and Coach likes me."
Ethan's voice became smaller.
"She said Mason needed a turn to feel proud."
Allison forced herself to stay calm.
"Did she ask you to quit?"
"She said I should think about it."
Allison looked toward the closed laptop.
Her mother had not only planned to pressure Allison.
She had quietly prepared Ethan to surrender before the adults even gathered.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Ethan shrugged.
"It sounded like a grandma talk."
The answer broke something inside Allison.
Children were trained to trust ordinary voices.
That trust made quiet manipulation especially powerful.
Allison reached for Ethan's hand.
"You did nothing wrong."
"I know."
He did not sound convinced.
"Do you?"
Ethan stared at the floor.
"I keep thinking maybe Grandma would still like me if I wasn't good at soccer."
Allison inhaled slowly.
"Your value has nothing to do with soccer."
"Then why does everybody care so much?"
It was the most reasonable question in the entire conflict.
Allison had no perfect answer.
"Sometimes adults confuse their own fears with what children need."
Ethan looked up.
"What is Grandma afraid of?"
"Losing people."
"Why would she lose Uncle Mark?"
Allison thought about Sarah's explanation.
"Because he gets angry when Mason is disappointed."
Ethan frowned.
"Mason gets disappointed a lot."
Allison almost smiled.
"So do you."
"Yeah."
"So do I."
Ethan leaned back.
"Then why does everyone act like disappointment is an emergency?"
Allison laughed softly despite herself.
"That is a very good question."
Ethan's phone buzzed.
Mason had sent a photo of his goalkeeper gloves.
Below it was a message.
"Saturday practice?"
Ethan typed back yes.
Then another message appeared.
"My dad said I'm grounded from seeing you."
Ethan's smile vanished.
Allison held out her hand.
"Can I see?"
Ethan passed her the phone.
A third message arrived.
"Mom says that's ridiculous."
Then a fourth.
"Dad is yelling because Lucy sent screenshots."
Allison handed the phone back.
"Do not get involved in their argument."
"I won't."
A minute later, Sarah called Allison.
She sounded exhausted.
"I need you to know Mark found out Lucy sent you the messages."
"Is Lucy okay?"
"She's upset, but she's fine."
"And Mason?"
"Angry."
Sarah paused.
"Mark says nobody from our house is going to Ethan's clinic."
Allison closed her eyes.
"That's his choice."
"There is more."
Sarah's voice dropped.
"Your mother just told him she will not attend any event where you are present until you apologize publicly."
Allison looked at Ethan.
He was reading Mason's messages with a worried face.
"Apologize for what?"
"For dividing the family."
Allison almost laughed.

Then Sarah said something else.
"She is sending that condition to the whole family tonight."
