Chapter 13 - The Line Allison Drew.

Allison opened the door but did not move aside.
Mark looked past her into the living room.
"Mason, get in the car."
Sarah stepped into the hallway.
"Do not talk to him like that."
Mark's eyes shifted toward his wife.
"You brought him here behind my back."
"I brought him to speak to his cousin."
"After I said no."
Mason stood beside the couch.
"Dad, I asked her."
Mark held up the box of cleats.
"We are leaving."
Mason did not move.
Allison kept her voice calm.
"Nobody is keeping him here."
Mark looked at her.
"Stay out of my marriage."
"I am standing in my house."
Sarah exhaled sharply.
"Mark, enough."
He turned toward her.
"You made me look like a liar in front of everyone."
Sarah's face changed.
"You were a liar in front of everyone."
The sentence landed harder than shouting would have.
Mark looked toward Mason.
"Car."
Mason swallowed.
"Can Ethan still go to the clinic?"
Mark stared at him.
"That is not your concern."
"It became my concern when you said I was taking his spot."
Mark's shoulders dropped slightly.
For a moment, Allison saw the brother she had grown up with beneath the defensiveness.
Then pride returned.
"I was trying to give you something."
Mason's voice trembled.
"I don't want things that make Ethan lose things."
Mark looked away.
Allison's anger softened, but her boundary did not.
"Mark, you need to leave."
He looked back at her.
"Gladly."
"And listen before you go."
He almost laughed.
"Here comes the speech."
"No speech."
Allison stood straighter.
"Ethan will go to the clinic."
Mark said nothing.
"He will attend birthdays, games, school events, and family gatherings where he is treated like a child, not a problem to manage."
Sarah watched quietly.
"I will not bring him to any meeting where adults ask him to shrink himself for someone else's comfort."
Mark's jaw tightened.
"So you're cutting us off."
"No."
"Sounds like it."
"I'm drawing a line."
Allison pointed gently toward the porch.
"You can cross it by behaving differently."
Mark's eyes narrowed.
"And Mom?"
"The same line applies to her."
"She will never apologize."
Allison felt sadness instead of fear.
"Then she will miss things."
Mark stared at her for several seconds.
Sarah spoke quietly.
"Mason, go wait in my car."
Mason looked at Ethan.
"Saturday?"
Ethan looked to Allison.
Allison looked to Sarah.
Sarah nodded.
"Saturday."
Mason smiled and walked outside.
Mark watched him pass.
"You two decided that too?"
Sarah shook her head.
"Our son decided he wants his cousin."
Mark looked toward the new cleats in his hand.
For the first time, he seemed unsure what to do with them.
He placed the box on the porch railing.
"Keep these for him."
Sarah looked at him.
"For Mason?"
"Yeah."
Mark's voice became quieter.
"They fit him."
Then he walked toward his truck alone.
Allison watched him leave.
Sarah let out a slow breath.
"That could have gone worse."
Allison almost agreed.
Then her phone buzzed.
A new message from her mother appeared.
"I heard you have banned me from Ethan's life."
Allison read it once.
May you like
Another message followed.
"I will be at his first clinic game whether you like it or not."
