Chapter 1: The Second Phone

I did not answer my attorney right away.
Because I already knew the answer.
Not who exactly—but how.
Alejandro was not careful enough to hide everything. He was just careful enough to delay being caught.
“There’s another phone,” I said finally.
My attorney leaned back slightly. “You’ve seen it?”
“No. But I’ve seen the behavior.”
Late-night walks. Calls taken outside. Messages that disappeared too quickly. A man who suddenly turned his screen away when I entered a room that used to be mine long before it was his.
“And Teresa?” she asked.
“They’ve been planning something,” I said. “Not just talking. Planning.”
She nodded once and reached for her pen. “Then we don’t react. We map.”
That afternoon, my CFO called me.
“I went through six months of card logs again,” she said. “There are patterns. Same restaurant. Same private room. Paid in cash once, corporate card the next. He didn’t think consistency mattered.”
“Who was he meeting?”
“I pulled security from one of the locations,” she said. “You’re not going to like it.”
I already didn’t.
“Send it.”
When the video came through, I watched it alone.
Alejandro sat at a table across from a man I recognized immediately.
Victor Salgado.
Regional director for one of our largest competitors.

I did not feel shocked.
I felt confirmed.
