Chapter 5: The Truth Beneath the Mask

Celeste didn’t scream.
Didn’t deny.
Didn’t run.
She stepped closer, her voice calm and terrifyingly steady.
“You were never supposed to notice,” she said.
“Most men don’t.”
“Why Noah?” I asked, my voice low.
Her eyes softened… almost lovingly.
“Because children adapt faster,” she said. “Their bodies accept change.”
My fists clenched.
“What change?”
She tilted her head.
“Evolution.”
The word echoed like a gunshot.
“These organisms,” she continued, “they’re the future. Stronger. Smarter. Perfectly controlled… if introduced correctly.”
My stomach turned.
“You’ve been experimenting on my son.”
She smiled again.
“I’ve been improving him.”
Before I could move, the front door burst open.
Police flooded in.
Mara stood behind them—shaking, but determined.
“I called them,” she whispered.
Celeste didn’t resist as they handcuffed her.
She just looked at me… almost amused.
“This isn’t over,” she said softly. “You have no idea what you’ve interrupted.”
As they dragged her away, Noah’s voice called from upstairs.
“Dad?”
I ran to him.
For the first time in days… he wasn’t in pain.
His small hand gripped mine.
“It stopped,” he said. “The biting stopped.”
I pulled him into my arms, holding him tighter than ever before.
“It’s over,” I whispered.
And this time…
It really was.
Epilogue: A Quiet Beginning
Months later, Noah was healthy again.
No pain.
No nightmares.
The organisms were gone—completely eradicated.
Celeste’s trial revealed everything.
Illegal experiments.
Hidden victims.
A network that stretched far beyond what we imagined.
But it ended with her.
And Noah?
He smiled again.
Laughed again.
Lived again.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, he looked up at me and said:
“Dad… you saved me.”
I shook my head gently.
“No,” I said.
“We saved each other.”

And for the first time since that nightmare began…
The house felt like home again.
