Chapter 10 - The Cake Was the Trap.

For twelve years, Claire had believed her father died because a rain-slick highway and a tired truck driver met at the wrong second.
The police report called it an unavoidable collision.
Thomas's car crossed the center line after a tire failure.
The truck driver survived.
Thomas did not.
Claire had been twenty-three.
She had spent years making peace with randomness.
Vanessa destroyed that peace with one sentence.
"What do you mean it wasn't an accident?"
Vanessa looked suddenly less certain.
"I mean Graham showed me part of Arthur's statement."
"Part?"
"A photograph of one page."
"What did it say?"
Vanessa swallowed.
"Arthur believed someone tampered with Thomas's car."
Claire stared at her.
"Who?"
"The page didn't say."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I don't care what you believe."
Vanessa's temper flashed.
Then she checked herself.
"I am telling you because Graham wants that statement destroyed."
Mara stood.
"Nobody is going to Mercer House without police."
Within twenty minutes, Julian had contacted the detective assigned to Daniel's disappearance and shared enough of the evidence to justify immediate concern.
Police units headed toward the mansion.
Claire stayed at Mara's office.
She hated every second.
At five-seventeen, the detective called.
Graham Bell was not at Mercer House.
Neither was Evelyn.
The old library safe stood open.
It was empty.
Claire pressed the phone against her ear.
"Was there forced entry?"
"No."
The detective paused.
"Whoever opened it had the combination."
Claire thought of Daniel's recorder.
Vanessa's birthday followed by Claire's birthday.
Several people could have known.
At five-thirty, a second call came.
Police had found blood in the river warehouse.
Not enough to prove anyone had died.
Enough to raise the stakes.
At six, Mara received notice that Graham had moved forward with the emergency custody hearing despite Daniel's disappearance.
He was not Daniel's family lawyer, but he had arranged for Cynthia Rowe to continue the case on behalf of the Mercer family trust.
"Can he do that?" Claire asked.
"He can try."
Mara looked furious.
"Tomorrow, we make him regret trying."
They spent the evening preparing.
The pantry footage established premeditation.
Noah's recording established the motive.
The forged signature established financial fraud.
Vanessa agreed to sign an affidavit admitting the slap was intentional and designed to provoke Claire.
Claire watched her sign.
"Why now?"
Vanessa did not look up.
"Because Graham used me."
"That doesn't erase what you did."
"I know."
Vanessa signed her full name.
For the first time, Claire noticed the middle initial.
H.
Vanessa Hale Mercer would have been her name if Thomas had acknowledged her.
Claire hated herself for thinking it.
At nine, Noah asked whether he could show Claire something else.
He brought his tablet again.
"The dinner video online is wrong."
Claire knelt beside him.
"I know."
"No."
He shook his head.
"I mean there's another video."
He opened Sophie's tablet cloud folder.
Sophie liked recording family dinners because she wanted to become a "food movie lady."
Claire had forgotten she placed the tablet against a flower vase before dinner.
The video ran continuously for thirty-two minutes.
It showed everything.
Vanessa's questions.
The phones positioned around the table.
Daniel's repeated discomfort.
Evelyn watching everyone.
The slap.
The cake.
Most importantly, the audio captured a conversation before Claire entered the room.
The family guests were already seated.
Graham's voice came from near the head of the table.
"Remember, nobody moves until after Claire reacts."
A cousin asked whether the children should be present.
Graham answered.
"They strengthen the petition."
Claire stopped the video.
For several seconds, she could not speak.
Mara looked disgusted.
"He used your children as scenery."
Claire's anger became something cleaner than rage.
Purpose.
She restarted the recording.
Daniel entered several minutes later.
"Why are the phones out?"
Graham answered.
"Insurance."
Daniel swore and told everyone to put them away.
Vanessa refused.
Then Evelyn spoke.
"Leave them."
Claire felt the floor drop beneath her again.
Evelyn had not merely known.
She had permitted the cameras.
Daniel stared at his mother on-screen.
"You said you were stopping this."
Evelyn's reply was quiet but clear.
"I said I was ending it."
Graham laughed.
"Same thing."
Evelyn turned toward him.
"Not remotely."
The conversation ended when Claire entered.
Mara replayed Evelyn's line.
I said I was ending it.
Claire looked at the brown envelope on the conference table.
The envelope Evelyn had planted.
The camera Evelyn had deliberately acknowledged.
The public dinner Evelyn had allowed to proceed.
A new possibility emerged.
"What if she wanted the trap to happen?"
Mara frowned.
"Why?"
"Because Graham needed to reveal himself."
Claire stood.
"The dinner wasn't only a trap for me."
She looked at the paused image of Graham instructing guests to wait for her reaction.
"Evelyn turned it into a trap for him."
Julian's phone rang.
He answered, listened, and looked sharply at Claire.
"Police found Daniel."
Claire's breath stopped.
"Alive?"
Julian nodded.
"Alive."
Relief hit her so fast it hurt.
May you like
Then he added the part that changed everything again.
"He was in Evelyn's car."
