Chapter 9 - The Enemy at the Door.

Vanessa entered Mara's office wearing sunglasses, a gray coat, and no makeup.

A bruise darkened the side of her jaw.

Claire noticed it immediately.

Vanessa noticed Claire noticing.

"Don't."

Claire folded her arms.

"I wasn't going to ask."

"Good."

Vanessa's voice was hoarse.

Mara required her to surrender her phone before entering the conference room.

Julian searched her bag with permission.

Vanessa complained about both procedures but submitted to them.

Then she sat across from Claire.

For the first time in years, she did not look superior.

She looked hunted.

Claire did not feel sorry for her.

"Where is Daniel?"

Vanessa's face tightened.

"I was hoping you knew."

"His car was found by the river warehouse."

"I know."

"Were you there?"

"No."

Claire leaned forward.

"You lied about knowing Thomas was your father."

Vanessa's eyes flickered.

"Evelyn lied."

"You let her."

"I didn't know what she told you."

"You knew enough to use my father's name against me for years."

Vanessa looked away.

For once, the cruelty left her face.

"I found out when I was twenty-seven."

"How?"

"Graham."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"Of course."

Vanessa ignored it.

Graham had approached her with a copy of an old paternity test and several trust pages.

He told her Thomas Hale had secretly fathered her and then arranged the trust to favor Claire because Claire was legitimate.

He told Vanessa that Evelyn and Arthur had spent decades helping Thomas erase her.

"Was it true?"

Claire asked.

"Some of it."

Vanessa swallowed.

"Enough of it."

She admitted taking money through North Quay.

She claimed Graham told her it represented distributions she was legally entitled to but could not claim openly without triggering a family scandal.

Mara stared at her.

"You moved millions of dollars on the advice of a chief financial officer without independent counsel?"

Vanessa's mouth tightened.

"I was angry."

"That is not a legal defense."

"I didn't say it was."

Claire watched her half-sister carefully.

The word still felt impossible.

"Why the custody plan?"

Vanessa's eyes hardened again.

"Because you were going to take everything."

"I didn't know anything existed."

"That made it worse."

Claire stared at her.

Vanessa laughed once, a broken sound.

"Do you know what it is like to spend your life being told you are lucky?"

Claire said nothing.

"Lucky Arthur loved me."

Vanessa's fingers curled.

"Lucky Evelyn kept the family together."

"Lucky Thomas never publicly rejected me because he never publicly acknowledged me."

She leaned closer.

"Then I watched you walk into this family wearing his name like a crown you didn't even know you had."

Claire's anger sharpened.

"So you tried to take my children."

Vanessa looked down.

"I tried to take your vote."

"By taking my children."

"Yes."

The admission was quiet.

Claire felt no satisfaction.

"And the slap?"

Vanessa touched the bruise on her own jaw.

"Graham said we needed something undeniable."

"So you hit me."

"Yes."

"In front of Noah and Sophie."

Vanessa's eyes filled with something close to shame.

"Yes."

Claire sat back.

"Then why are you here?"

Vanessa looked at Julian.

"Because Graham tried to kill me last night."

The room went silent.

Vanessa opened her coat and revealed a torn seam near the shoulder.

She said Graham had summoned her to the river warehouse after learning the Saintbridge box had been opened.

He demanded the location of Arthur's original trust amendment.

Vanessa did not know.

He accused her of warning Claire.

When she tried to leave, a man she did not recognize blocked the exit.

Vanessa escaped through a loading bay after hitting Graham with a metal flashlight.

"That is where the bruise came from?"

Claire asked.

"No."

Vanessa's eyes shifted.

"Daniel gave me this."

Claire froze.

"Daniel hit you?"

"Yesterday morning."

Vanessa touched her jaw again.

"He came to my house after you opened the vault."

"Why?"

"He wanted me to sign a statement admitting the custody plan was fabricated."

"And you refused."

Vanessa gave a humorless smile.

"I told him I would sign it if he gave me Arthur's original trust amendment."

"What happened?"

"He lost control."

Claire remembered Daniel's voice on the recorder admitting cowardice.

She also remembered the years he had rarely raised his voice.

Quiet people were not incapable of violence.

Sometimes they simply hid it better.

Vanessa reached into her coat pocket slowly.

Julian stood.

She placed a folded receipt on the table.

It came from a parking garage near Mercer House.

Time stamped two-fifteen that afternoon.

"Why does this matter?"

Mara asked.

"Because Graham's car entered the garage twelve minutes before mine."

Vanessa looked at Claire.

"He's going to the house."

Claire's pulse jumped.

"The safe."

Vanessa nodded.

"He knows about it now."

"How?"

Vanessa's eyes became flat.

"Because Evelyn told him."

Claire stood.

"No."

"You keep assuming my mother is helping you."

Vanessa laughed softly.

"She is helping herself."

"Why would she give Graham the safe?"

Vanessa looked toward the door.

"Because the original trust amendment contains more than paternity."

Mara leaned forward.

"What else?"

Vanessa answered.

"A confession from Arthur."

Claire felt dread move through her.

"Confessing what?"

May you like

Vanessa stared at her half-sister.

"That Thomas Hale didn't die in an accident."
