Chapter 10 - The Boardroom Christmas.

The emergency board meeting took place on December twenty-seventh.

Mercer Hospitality's downtown conference room had no Christmas tree, no candles, and no place for anyone to hide behind tradition.

Rachel attended with Maya.

Richard sat at the head of the table.

Eleanor sat beside him even though she was not a board member.

Lauren arrived last.

Daniel came in behind her and took the only empty seat across from Rachel.

Nobody mentioned the wedding ring still in Maya's locked file.

Richard opened the meeting with a statement.

"The company has a liquidity problem."

Lauren interrupted.

"We have a Rachel problem."

Rachel did not react.

Maya placed copies of the disputed documents on the table.

"The two are not the same thing."

Lauren looked at her father.

"Are we really doing this with lawyers?"

Richard's voice was tired.

"We should have done it with lawyers from the beginning."

Lauren's face hardened.

Rachel opened the printed email showing the signature sample.

"Did you send this?"

Lauren glanced at it.

"I sent a reference sample."

"For what purpose?"

"To keep the application moving."

"Without my approval?"

Lauren leaned forward.

"You were going to approve it."

Rachel stared at her.

"You decided that for me?"

"Everyone knew you would eventually understand."

Daniel spoke quietly.

"Lauren, stop."

Lauren turned on him.

"Don't suddenly grow principles now."

The room went silent.

Daniel's face tightened.

Lauren pointed toward him.

"He knew the company needed Hawthorne."

"He knew Mom wanted Rachel calm."

"He knew Dad was desperate."

"And he did exactly what he always does."

"Nothing."

Daniel did not defend himself.

For once, he looked directly at Rachel.

"She's right about that part."

Eleanor whispered his name.

Daniel ignored her.

"I did not create Rachel's signature."

"But I knew there were documents moving through the company that she had not reviewed."

Rachel felt no relief.

Truth arriving late still carried a cost.

Daniel continued.

"I told myself Dad would explain everything before anything became final."

"Then I told myself Rachel would probably agree anyway."

"Then I told myself keeping Christmas peaceful was better than starting another fight."

He looked down.

"Every excuse was easier than saying one sentence."

Lauren scoffed.

"This performance is embarrassing."

Richard turned toward her.

"Did you direct anyone to place Rachel's signature on the December twenty-first authorization?"

Lauren's eyes flashed.

"I told accounting to prepare the package."

"That is not what I asked."

Lauren stood.

"You all wanted the same result."

Nobody answered.

That silence was different from Christmas dinner.

This time it did not protect Lauren.

It isolated her.

Maya slid a second email across the table.

It came from the company's outside document processor.

The processor had written to Lauren:

"We cannot accept a pasted signature as executed authorization."

Lauren had replied:

"Send the draft anyway."

Richard closed his eyes.

Eleanor looked physically ill.

Rachel remained still.

Lauren looked around the table and finally understood that nobody was going to rescue her from her own words.

She grabbed her bag.

"Fine."

"Save your precious company without me."

She walked out.

The door slammed behind her.

Richard stared at the empty chair.

Then he looked at Rachel.

"What do you want?"

Rachel's answer surprised everyone.

"I want the employees paid."

Daniel looked up.

May you like

Rachel continued.

"And I want my property out of your company forever."
