Chapter 6 - The Witness Initials.

Rachel stared at the letters until they blurred.
D.M.
They were Daniel's initials.
They looked like his handwriting.
They appeared beside a statement confirming that Rachel had signed the authorization in his presence.
Maya leaned closer to the screen.
"Do not assume anything yet."
Rachel looked at her.
"What exactly am I supposed to assume?"
"Nothing."
"His initials are there."
"Then we ask him about them."
Rachel stood and walked to the window.
Below, families were arriving for Christmas brunch, children carrying gift bags through the lobby.
The ordinary happiness felt almost insulting.
Maya closed the attachment.
"You can meet him somewhere public with me present, or we can send questions through counsel."
Rachel turned around.
"I want to hear him answer."
At noon, Daniel arrived at a private conference room in Maya's office building.
He looked as though he had aged a year since dinner.
Rachel sat at one end of the table.
Maya sat beside her.
Daniel stopped when he saw the printed credit request.
Rachel pushed it toward him.
"Explain your initials."
Daniel did not touch the paper.
"Where did you get this?"
"Wrong question."
"Rachel."
"Explain them."
Daniel sat down.
For several seconds, he stared at the document.
"Dad brought me a stack of papers last year."
Rachel said nothing.
"He said you had already approved the roof financing and needed a witness."
"Did you watch me sign this?"
Daniel looked up.
"No."
Rachel felt the room narrow around her.
"Then why did you certify that you did?"
"I thought it was administrative."
Maya spoke for the first time.
"A witness certification is not administrative."
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
"I know that now."
Rachel leaned forward.
"Did you know it was a $400,000 line of credit?"
"Not when I initialed it."
"When did you find out?"
Daniel hesitated.
Rachel's voice dropped.
"When?"
"A few weeks later."
"And you told me?"
He looked away.
"It was already done."
Rachel laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
"That is your answer to everything."
"I was trying to protect you from stress."
"You were protecting yourself from conflict."
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"You don't know what my father was dealing with."
"And you don't know what I was dealing with because you made sure I didn't know."
Silence filled the room.
Then Rachel placed the new $1.8 million packet beside the old one.
"Did you sign anything connected to this?"
"No."
"Did you know they planned to ask me?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Yes."
"Did you know the lender wanted final confirmation on the twenty-sixth?"
"Yes."
Rachel nodded slowly.
"Did your mother tell you to keep me calm until after Christmas?"
Daniel's face changed.
That was enough.
Rachel sat back.
"You read the email."
"Rachel, you have to understand."
"I understand perfectly."
Daniel's voice rose.
"My family's company employs almost two hundred people."
"Then your family should have told me the truth before trying to attach my home to their debt."
"They believed you'd say no."
Rachel stared at him.
"So they decided my answer didn't matter?"
Daniel had no response.
His silence returned.
This time it was not passive.
It was an admission.
Rachel looked at Maya.
"I'm done."
Daniel stood quickly.
"Done with what?"
Rachel looked at him.
"Pretending I don't understand what your silence means."
Daniel's face went pale.
"Are you leaving me?"
Rachel removed her wedding ring and placed it on the table between them.
"I'm leaving the version of this marriage where everyone gets a vote except me."
Daniel stared at the ring.
Then Maya's phone vibrated.
She read the new message and frowned.
"Rachel."
"What?"
Maya turned the screen toward her.
The lender had found another document.
This one was not witnessed by Daniel.
May you like
It was witnessed by Lauren.
And the signature attached to Rachel's name was dated three days before Christmas.
