CHAPTER 2 — The Door That Locked Itself

The ballroom doors closed.
Not slammed.
Not dramatically.
Just… sealed.
One by one, discreet staff members stopped moving. Not guests. Staff. The people everyone had ignored all evening.
They weren’t waiters.
They were positioned.
Madison noticed first.
“What is this?” she snapped. “Why are the exits—”
“Controlled,” Benjamin finished calmly.
He finally looked at her.
Not with anger.
With something worse.
Disappointment.
“I don’t usually attend private events,” he said. “But when I do, I prefer to know why a Sterling-managed venue is hosting a Whitmore family gathering without clearance.”
Ethan laughed too loudly.
“You’re insane. This is a hotel, not a prison.”
Benjamin tilted his head slightly.
“Correct,” he said. “This is a hotel.”
Then he added:
“Owned by Sterling Holdings. Which means tonight was never yours to host.”
A ripple moved through the room.
People began checking phones.
Whispers spread like smoke.
Madison’s mother finally shifted in her seat, unease cracking her composed mask.
Emma did not move.
May you like
For the first time in her life, she was not trying to fix the moment.
She was watching it unfold.
