CHAPTER 4 — The Collapse of Beautiful People

Madison’s voice rose again, thinner now.
“This is about her,” she said suddenly, pointing at Emma. “You’re doing this because of her.”
Benjamin didn’t react.
But Emma did.
Because Madison wasn’t entirely wrong.
Benjamin walked closer to the center table.
Stopped beside Emma.
“You asked me once,” he said quietly, only for her, “why I never corrected them.”
Emma remembered.
He had only said: Because some rooms correct themselves eventually.
Now she understood.
He turned back to the room.
“Emma Caldwell was not the target of tonight’s gathering,” he said.
A pause.
“She was the reason it was allowed to continue this long.”
Confusion spread.
Benjamin opened a second file.
Old emails.
Hospital billing.
Property transfers.
A signature pattern.
Emma’s mother went pale.
Because it was hers.
Madison whispered, “What did you do?”
Benjamin answered softly:
“I didn’t do anything.”
“I just stopped protecting decisions you’ve been hiding behind family dinners.”
The truth didn’t explode.
It settled.

Heavy.
Permanent.
