Chapter 4: The Fall

Three days later, she came home furious.
“They fired me!” she snapped, throwing her bag on the couch. “Out of nowhere!”
I looked up calmly.
“That’s strange.”
“And my card declined at the store,” she continued. “And the car dealership called about missed payments—Daniel, what is going on?”
I stood.
Walked toward her.
Stopped just inches away.
“I’m correcting mistakes.”
Her face went pale.
“You wouldn’t—”
“I would,” I said evenly.
“You built your life on my back, Clara. My money. My trust. My absence.”
Her voice cracked. “I’m your wife!”
“And she’s my mother,” I said, my voice finally breaking through with force. “The woman you treated like a servant.”
Tears filled her eyes now.
Too late.
“I’m not leaving you with nothing,” I added. “But you’re not staying here.”
She stepped back like I had slapped her.
“You’re choosing her over me?”
