A month later, the house felt different.
Quieter.
Warmer.
My mother no longer whispered.
She laughed.
She rested.
She lived.
One evening, we sat together on the porch, watching the sunset.
“You didn’t have to do all that,” she said gently.
“I did,” I replied. “I just should’ve done it sooner.”
She placed her hand over mine.
“You’re a good son.”
I shook my head.
“I’m just trying to be the man you raised.”
The wind carried the scent of jasmine through the air.
For the first time in a long time—
I felt peace.
Not because I had won.
But because I had finally seen the truth.
