Chapter 1: The Night Everything Broke

The door slammed shut behind the security guards as they dragged the stepmother out, her screams echoing down the marble hallway until silence swallowed them whole.

Inside the nursery, everything felt fragile.

Lena still sat on the floor, trembling, her fingers clutching the torn photograph like it was the only thing keeping her grounded. The baby stirred softly in the crib, unaware that the world had just shifted.

“Lena…”

Her husband’s voice broke.

Daniel dropped to his knees in front of her, his hands shaking as he gently touched her cheek—the same cheek that still carried the faint red mark.

“I’m so sorry,” he whispered.

For the first time since the slap, Lena let herself cry—not quietly, not carefully, but completely. Years of silent endurance cracked open all at once.

“You didn’t see it…” she choked. “You never saw what she did when you weren’t there.”

Daniel closed his eyes in pain. He had trusted his stepmother. Defended her. Believed her carefully crafted kindness.

“I see it now,” he said firmly. “And I will never let anyone hurt you again.”

That night, he didn’t leave her side.

Not as a husband of convenience.
But as a man who finally chose his family.
