Chapter 2: Picking Up the Pieces

The next morning, the mansion felt different.
Lighter.
The staff moved more freely. The air no longer carried tension—it carried relief.
The housekeeper, Mrs. Alvarez, approached Lena quietly in the kitchen.
“You’re safe now,” she said, her voice thick with emotion. “We’ve been waiting for this day.”
Lena managed a small smile.
But healing wasn’t instant.
For days, she flinched at sudden noises. She hesitated before entering rooms. She double-checked locks at night.
Daniel noticed everything.
He canceled meetings.
Delegated work.
Stayed home.
Not out of guilt—but out of commitment.
One evening, he brought out the broken photo frame Lena had been holding that night.
Carefully repaired.
Inside it was the same picture—only now, it included their baby, newly added.
“We start again,” he said.
“No more fear in this house.”

Lena looked at the photo… then at him.
And for the first time, she believed it.
