Chapter 1: The Weight of Truth

The days after the assembly felt unreal.
Maya kept expecting things to go back to the way they wereâto whispers behind her back, to eyes quickly looking away, to the quiet loneliness she had learned to live with.
But Oakridge High had changed.
Students who had never spoken to her before now smiled in the hallways. Some even apologized. The freshman who recorded the video became an unexpected ally, walking beside her between classes like a silent shield.
Still, attention felt heavy.
Maya sat alone at lunch, staring at her tray when Ethan approached. He hesitated for a second, as if unsure whether he still had the right to sit across from her.
âCan I?â he asked.
Maya nodded.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
âI shouldâve known,â Ethan finally said, his voice tight. âLucas⊠he never talked about rehab. Not really. I thought he was just trying to protect me.â
Maya looked up. âHe was protecting you. And himself.â
Ethan swallowed hard. âHe wrote about you.â
Maya blinked. âWhat?â
Ethan reached into his backpack and pulled out a worn notebook. âI found this after everything. Itâs his journal.â
He slid it across the table.
Maya hesitated before opening it.
Inside were pages filled with uneven handwritingâraw, honest, and painfully alive.
And there, between stories of pain and fear, were lines about her.
Thereâs this girl here. She lost part of her leg, but somehow sheâs stronger than anyone Iâve ever met. She doesnât pretend everything is okay. She says it hurtsâand somehow that makes it easier for me to admit it too.
Mayaâs vision blurred.
âI didnât save him,â she whispered. âWe just⊠sat together.â
Ethan shook his head. âThatâs exactly what he needed.â

For the first time, Maya didnât feel like a secret.
She felt seen.
