Chapter 2: Standing Again

Recovery wasn’t just physical.

Maya returned to physical therapy after the fall, her body aching in ways that reminded her of the accident she had fought so hard to move past.

This time, though, she wasn’t alone.

Ethan waited for her after school one afternoon, leaning awkwardly against the gym wall.

“I thought maybe
I could walk with you,” he said.

Maya raised an eyebrow. “You do realize I’m slower than you, right?”

Ethan smiled faintly. “Then I’ll finally learn patience.”

They walked the track together.

Step by step.

At first, it was quiet. The sound of her prosthetic against the pavement echoed in steady rhythm. But something about the silence wasn’t uncomfortable anymore.

It was shared.

“You know,” Ethan said after a while, “Lucas used to hate it when people called him brave.”

Maya laughed softly. “Yeah. He told me bravery is just what people say when they don’t understand the pain.”

Ethan looked at her. “So what do you call it?”

Maya thought for a moment.

“Continuing,” she said. “Even when you don’t want to.”

Ethan nodded.

They kept walking.

And for the first time since Lucas died, Ethan didn’t feel stuck in the past.

And for the first time since her accident, Maya didn’t feel defined by it.

They were both
 moving forward.
