Chapter 1: The Mark of the Forgotten

The room held its breath.
Colonel Vanceâs fingers tightened around the tarnished pendant as if it were something aliveâsomething dangerous. His eyes never left Mayaâs face.
âWhere did you get this?â he asked, his voice low but shaking in a way no one had ever heard before.
Maya swallowed, still holding her crying baby close. âI⊠Iâve had it my whole life. They said it was found with me when I was little. I donât know anything else.â
A ripple of murmurs spread through the crowd.
Victoria scoffed, trying to regain control. âThis is ridiculous. Itâs just a piece of junkââ
âIt is not junk.â
The sharpness in Vanceâs voice cut her off instantly.
He stepped closer to Maya, his expression softening, but his eyes filled with something far heavierârecognition⊠and guilt.
âThis insigniaâŠâ he whispered, brushing the crest again. âIt belongs to a classified military unit. One that was wiped out over twenty years ago.â
The room froze.
âA unit?â someone whispered.
Vance nodded slowly, his gaze still locked on Maya. âA covert intelligence division. Their records were erased. Their families⊠disappeared.â
Mayaâs heart pounded. âWhat does that have to do with me?â
Vance exhaled deeply, as if carrying the weight of decades.
âBecause,â he said, his voice cracking for the first time, âthe last report from that unit mentioned a missing child. A two-year-old girl⊠who vanished the night the operation collapsed.â
Silence.
Victoriaâs face drained of color.

Vance took one more step forward.
âMaya,â he said carefully, âI believe⊠that child was you.â
