Chapter 2: The Truth Buried in Ashes

The world tilted.

Maya shook her head instinctively. “No
that’s not possible. I was just
 abandoned.”

“You were hidden,” Vance corrected gently.

He turned to the stunned audience. “That unit uncovered something dangerous—corruption at the highest level. Before they could expose it, they were eliminated. Officially, it was called an accident.”

He paused.

“It wasn’t.”

Gasps echoed across the hall.

Maya’s grip tightened around her baby. “And my parents?”

Vance’s jaw clenched. “Your father was the lead investigator. Your mother
a civilian analyst who refused to leave his side.”

His voice softened.

“They died protecting you.”

Tears spilled down Maya’s cheeks.

All her life, she had been told she came from nothing.

And now—

“You were never nothing,” Vance said firmly. “You were the one thing they saved.”

Across the room, Victoria stumbled backward, her confidence completely shattered. “This is absurd. Even if it’s true, it changes nothing—”

“It changes everything,” a new voice interrupted.

All eyes turned.

Maya’s husband stepped forward.

For the first time that night, he looked directly at her—not at the floor, not at the crowd.

At her.

“I should’ve spoken sooner,” he said, his voice steady but filled with regret. “I was afraid of my mother
 of this family’s expectations.”

He moved closer.

“But I’m more afraid of losing you.”

Victoria snapped, “You will not embarrass this family for her—”

“She is my family,” he said firmly.

Silence fell again.

Then Vance spoke once more, his voice carrying authority.

“There’s more,” he said. “The case your parents died for
 it was never closed.”

He looked at Maya.

“And now that we know who you are—it can be reopened.”

A spark lit in Maya’s eyes.

May you like

For the first time in her life, she didn’t feel small.

She felt
 powerful.
