Chapter 1: The Midnight Knock

The pounding didn’t stop.

Not even when the hallway lights flickered on.

Not even when the concierge called up, voice trembling, asking if everything was alright.

She didn’t answer.

On the other side of the door, her stepmother’s voice cracked for the first time in years.

“You don’t understand what you’ve done.”

She almost laughed.

Oh, she understood perfectly.

The hotel her stepmother had ruled like a queen for a decade…
was no longer hers.

Ownership had shifted quietly at 9:14 PM.

Legal. Irreversible.

The board had already been notified.

Security reports had already been filed.

And at exactly 11:58 PM, new authorization codes had been activated.

Including the one that locked her stepmother out of every private suite in the building.

She finally spoke—soft, calm, almost kind.

“You should go home.”

Silence.

Then a whisper, sharp with disbelief:

“This was never yours to take.”

May you like

She leaned her head against the door.

“No,” she said.
“It was always mine. You just borrowed it too long.”
