Chapter 15: Home Beneath the Waves

The probe returned hours later, its data overwhelming.

Patterns.

Coordinates.

Signals older than any known naval system.

“This changes everything,” Sarah said.

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes,” she agreed. “But not in the way people expect.”

“Meaning?”

Evelyn looked around the control room.

At her crew.

At the submarine.

At the quiet strength surrounding her.

“It doesn’t make us more powerful,” she said. “It reminds us how small we are.”

Sarah smiled faintly. “That’s not exactly what command likes to hear.”

Evelyn smirked slightly. “Then they should come down here more often.”

The three unknown objects reappeared briefly.

One final time.

Then disappeared forever.

The structure went dark again.

Its purpose fulfilled.

“What now?” Sarah asked.

Evelyn stepped back, her voice steady.

“Now,” she said, “we go home.”

The Vanguard began its ascent.

Slowly rising through the vast ocean.

Through darkness.

Through silence.

Toward the light.

As the first rays of sunlight broke across the surface, Evelyn stood once again on the bridge.

The wind hit her face.

The horizon stretched endlessly ahead.

But something inside her had shifted.

Not uncertainty.

Not fear.

Clarity.

She had faced fire.

She had faced the past.

And now—

She had faced the unknown.

And chosen not to conquer it.

But to understand it.

Sarah joined her quietly. “You ever think you’d end up here?”

Evelyn smiled, looking out across the ocean.

“I never thought I’d feel this… at peace.”

The Vanguard cut through the waves.

Not as a weapon.

Not as a symbol of power.

But as something far more important.

A promise.

That even in the deepest, darkest places—

Truth could still be found.

And for the first time in her life—

Evelyn Harrington wasn’t running from anything.

She wasn’t proving anything.

She wasn’t fighting for control.

May you like

She was simply—

Home.
