Chapter 1: The Rain and the Promise

The rain fell hard that afternoon, cold and relentless, turning the streets into a blur of gray. People hurried past, heads down, umbrellas clutched tight—everyone except her.

Emily sat quietly in her wheelchair, her small hands resting in her lap. Raindrops tapped against the edge of the umbrella held above her by Mr. Carter, the man who had cared for her since she was little. His grip was steady, but his eyes carried a quiet worry that never seemed to fade.

Then came the boy.

He stood in the rain, completely soaked, like he didn’t even notice the storm. His eyes locked onto Emily—not with pity, but with something else. Something certain.

“Let me try,” he said gently, stepping closer. “I can help you.”

Mr. Carter frowned. “That’s not how this works, son.”

But Emily looked up, something flickering in her eyes for the first time in a long while.

“Let him,” she whispered.

There was a long pause. Then, slowly, Mr. Carter stepped aside.
