Chapter 3: Where It Truly Begins

Tears streamed down Mr. Carter’s face as Emily took her first step. Then another. Each one stronger than the last.
“I’m… walking,” she whispered, almost afraid to believe it.
The boy smiled, stepping back slightly but never letting her fall.
“You always could,” he said. “You just needed to believe it.”
The energy faded, but something deeper remained—a quiet strength, a new beginning.
Emily looked out over the city, the sunlight warming her face. For the first time in her life, the world didn’t feel out of reach.
It felt open.
Possible.
“Who are you?” she asked, turning back to the boy.
He paused, then gave a small, knowing smile.
“Just someone who knew this wasn’t the end for you.”
Mr. Carter stepped forward, placing a hand gently on Emily’s shoulder, his voice breaking with emotion. “You did it… you really did it.”
Emily took another step—this time on her own.
The boy watched for a moment longer, then quietly turned and walked away.
“Wait!” Emily called.
He stopped, glancing back.
“What happens now?”
He smiled again—soft, certain.
“Now,” he said, “this is where it begins.”
And for the first time, Emily believed him.
