Chapter 2: The Weight of Power

The grand doors closed behind her.
Outside, the evening air was cold, sharp against her skin.
The Maid stood alone at the bottom of the marble steps, her small suitcase placed beside her like a quiet punctuation mark.
No shouting.
No pleading.
Just silence.
Inside, the Woman in Red paced like a storm contained in silk.
“You fired her?” she demanded, turning sharply to the Man in Suit.
“She defied you,” he replied simply.
“She embarrassed me.”
“She protected someone weaker than you.”
That stopped her.
For a fraction of a second.
But pride recovered quickly.
“You forget your place,” she snapped.
The Man in Suit didn’t respond.
Because he hadn’t forgotten anything.
Across the room, the Elderly Woman spoke—her voice thin, but clear.
“She didn’t forget hers.”
