Chapter 7: The Second Letter

Chapter 6: The Second Letter

The attic was colder this time.

The shadows seemed longer.

Lily climbed carefully, her heart pounding louder with every step. She went straight to the cedar chest and opened it again.

This time, she dug deeper.

Underneath the scarves.

Beneath the photographs.

At the very bottom, hidden between folded fabric, her fingers brushed something firm.

A book.

Old. Worn. Leather-bound.

Lily pulled it out.

Inside, pages filled with her mother’s handwriting.

A journal.

Her breath caught.

She flipped through quickly until something slipped out and fell to the floor.

Another envelope.

Smaller.

This one had her name.

For my Lily, if I am no longer there to tell you the truth.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

May you like

Inside was a letter.

And a key.
