Chapter 10: What Remains

Chapter 9: What Remains
The house was quiet again.
But this time, it felt different.
Lighter.
Lucas sat beside Lily on the porch steps as the sun set.
For a long time, neither of them spoke.
Finally, he exhaled.
“I should have listened,” he said softly.
Lily leaned against him.
“You didn’t know.”
He looked down at her.
“No,” he said. “But you did.”
She nodded slightly.
“I just… followed Mommy’s words.”
Lucas smiled sadly.
“She always knew how to protect us.”
He wrapped his arm around Lily.
“And now,” he added, “so do you.”
Inside, the wedding decorations were being taken down.
The white roses removed.
The illusion gone.
But something real remained.
Trust.
Truth.
And the quiet strength of a little girl who refused to let her mother’s voice be forgotten.
That night, Lucas placed both letters in a frame beside Grace’s photograph.
Not as a memory of loss.
But as a reminder.
Love doesn’t disappear.
It protects.
Even when it’s no longer seen.
